AFF members would by the very fact if their avid travelling may also be avid photographers.
Can we start a Sticky Thread "Ask the Photographer".

Sort of along the lines of the title:

I am looking at buying an action video camera. Just not a GoPro as they are $400+

Has anyone any experience with something around $100-200? I will want to mount it in my car for a forthcoming offroad adventure. Wireless connection to an iOS device a must.

Thanks but they seem to be more along the lines of continuous loop recording in case of an accident. I am after an action cam style that I can mount on the windscreen or bull bar and control from an iDevice.

Dashcams can be set in settings to do the same. Parking garage surveillance mode is one mode other modes can also be like blackbox in airplane - loop recording, or "event/sportscam" mode. some have Wifi and also GPS coordinates input.

YGWYP = you get what you paid.

I appreciate your suggestions. I am looking for an outdoors capable action-cam style camera. JBHiFi have a few, I just don't know enough about them.

Jessica,

While i would say the gopro is worth the value and would recommend it (i have just brought the black myself) The sony is by all reports very good and i believe its around the 250 mark?? its just a bit of an odd shape making mounting (moslty on your person harder) but should be fine for your needs. there are also rip off gopro's (sjcam.com) or check out pushys.com.au (just brought some mounts and stuff from there for a good price)

you could also look at the gopro 'white' i think its called? its the entry level model and around the 200-250 mark aswell (unsure if it has wifi and all of that though?)

Thanks for the advice. I will look into the Sony.

Just one thing with action cams look into the mounts and the prices of them that you will need, alot of companies make products compatible with gopro, sony use a mini tripod screw so that means they are very open to using any 3rd party system, can even use gopro mounts for them aswell with the adapter.

Be warned mounts arent cheap! easy to spend $200+ on them alone by the time you get a pole, float, float handle, roll bar mount (which will probably be best to mount to the bull bar) and a suction cup for inside shots?. If you are doing any water crossing in your 4wd trip or going to use it near water at all I would put a float on it just incase because mounts do fail.

youtube is full of advice about different ways to mount stuff, and have a lot of DIY mounting tips which can save a lot of money.
