The problem is, how many Australians are actually travelling to Korea during the Korean winter? I’m not convinced these dates are a true representation of the year-round demand from Melbourne. If anything, they may simply reflect the seasonal demand created by Koreans escaping the Korean winter

Surely Asiana had years of data on the Melbourne–Seoul market, stretching back more than a decade. Korean Air should already have a pretty good understanding of the underlying demand, rather than needing to spend another year or two testing the same seasonal market.

I was really hoping Korean Air would come in with something better than this. A once-weekly year-round service would have at least demonstrated some commitment to the Melbourne market.

That's if they feel the need for it rather than funnel through Sydney. That said is KE even THAT competitive price wise?

From memory they charge quite a lot thus they're really after the premium/ Korean market - not the younger Aussies looking to visit Korea.

If I'm budget conscious, KE likely isn't even on my radars, lots of one stops that are cheaper with airlines that are not very far off KE (or equal) like Cathay or China Southern.

That's the problem....funneling through Sydney. It's not attractive to me or I'm sure many other people. I've heard horror stories of people missing or almost missing their connecting international flight due to issues with their domestic flight from Melbourne. Much better off flying to Korea via Cathay Pacific if Korean Air can't be bothered with Melbourne...
