Hi everyone,

Fairly new to the community forums, this is my first time trying to book redemption flights. Hopefully anyone can share some advice/insight into this matter. Thanks in advance.

I've transferred my Westpac Altitude points to AM before the November depreciation change, hoping to redeem 3 business class seats from SYD to HKG (we don't mind flying separately if that means we can all sit in business) in early December 2019.

I have been searching for availability on AM, however they're all giving the waitlist option. When I search on QF or BA, both are showing a few J seats available (Not necessarily the direct SYD to HKG, most available flights are via BNE, ADL or PER).

I have attached 2 screenshots (1 each from AM and QF) showing some of the same flights on the same day.

I am wondering if CX has been blocking those standard business redemption seats? Will they be released anytime soon? Should I waitlist it right now so that when they're released I will be able to get them? Lastly, should I call CX/AM and ask them to book me on those "available" flights I saw on QF/BA?

Appreciate any advice or insight.

Merry Christmas everyone, and wish you all a Happy new year.

Ed

Just stumbled apon this while looking for information on Asia Miles myself.
The first thing to note about these two programs is that QF is not 100% accurately representative of the CX availability. I have gone to use QF points on a CX flight which appears available, and simply get an error as I attempt to proceed with QF.
Secondly, and I do not explicitly know if this appears to CX and QF or not, but some airlines make seats on a certain flight available as part of a connecting flight only. Called married segments I think it was, that can skew results.
Thirdly in your example, QF might keep some BNE-SYD availability for it's own program, and CX might not be able to book you on that flight, or considering it is close to 12 months away CX might not allow booking onto QF that far out. You could try again now if you haven't already.

And merry Christmas :po_O

Thanks for the reply. I eventually gave up. I ended up finding availabilities with JL from SYD to NRT and will be staying there for a few days (to make use of the stopover) then flying to Asia.

Thanks for the info!
