When we leave, my partner and I always say “cross check” and we both do a sweeping check throughout the room, bathroom, safe, cupboards, shelves - the whole works and we have never left anything behind.
Fingers crossed you are able to maintain that clean record @Chalan
And a warm welcome to posting on AFF :)

I always do an idiot check before leaving an accommodation, with good success, but a couple of months ago at the Grand Chancellor Launceston I failed.

I omitted to pick up my small digital travel alarm, and when I got home and discovered the missing item, I thought, well it's only a $10 thing, and just bought another.

All makes good sense. The one thing that still seems to evade my last minute checks is my bathroom nighlight. I hate having to enter a bathroom lit up like an operating theatre at night when I go for a P so I travel with an inobtrusive little plug in night-lite. Alas I continue to donate the odd ones to hotels. I TRY to remember on my last morning and visit to bathroom to immediately chuck it in my case.

Now if hotels put a nice low/variable light in their bathrooms I would not have this problem. Hello Accor, IhG, Hilton, etc. !
We recently stayed at EAST HK. When we first arrived, we thought the design was confusing and a bit pretentious and that they changed things just for the sake of being different. After 5 nights we came to appreciate many of the design differences. One was a set of low intensity footlights around the base of the bed and in the bathroom, all controlled by a switch on each of the bedside tables, ideal for any required excursions without disturbing room-mates.
