Tattooed mum 'belittled' by Jetstar
February 7, 2006 - 2:34PM

A Jetstar passenger says she was made to feel "like a leper" when flight attendants forced her to cover up a sexually explicit tattoo while she was on one of their flights.

Mother-of-two Peta Bull, 36 of Mackay in central Queensland, last week sent a letter of complaint to Jetstar CEO Alan Joyce following the incident on the Mackay to Brisbane flight on January 26.

Jetstar has yet to receive Ms Bull's complaint, but spokesman Bruce Buchanan today said the airline had a duty of care to protect passengers from "offensive material".

"Normally what we do is just ask that they take it out of view of other passengers ... it's basically a standard procedure that we have," he told Southern Cross Radio.

Ms Bull said after she boarded the plane, a young air hostess took her to the back of the plane and looked at the tattoo on her right shoulder of a naked man and woman in an intimate embrace.

When she returned to her seat, two crew members approached Ms Bull and asked her, in front of other passengers, to cover up the tattoo.

"They gave me a crew jacket and said if I didn't put it on they would escort me from the plane," she told the Mackay Mercury newspaper.

Ms Bull said she wore the jacket until the aircraft landed in Brisbane and waited for people to leave the plane before disembarking.

"I gave the hostess the jacket and she told me I had to wear it into the terminal," she said.

"I was embarrassed and belittled. I can't believe they singled me out."

It's almost like this airline goes out of its way to get people off side

I think she belittled herself by having what is described as an offensive tattoo, and I also think the airline has acted appropriately in asking her to cover up. Would you want your kids looking at something offensive, and it must have been something bad for the airline to have acted in the manner they did.

Agree a bash about nothing.

"I cant believe they singled me out" sounds like a load of crock. If tatoo is what it reads as, then no doubt she's been asked to cover up before or denied entry to places. The only reason to have such a tatoo is to be provacative. Well sometimes that means get a reaction you dont like - tough. Should have thought of that before getting the tatoo.

I saw the article today and thought that the cabin crew did nothing wrong in requesting that it be covered over; have a tattoo that could be offensive and thems the breaks

I agree, want to flash the tattoo around, expect remarks, consequences.
She was on John Laws this morning (he sided with her), she quoted that her children didn't mind the tattoo.

The art in question was on her back shoulder and the photo showed it covered up pretty well by her top strap. I would have taken more offense to the lad wearing the coughK tShirt on the ame flight, maybe they should have flown lynxjet

French Connection UK (cough) is a clever marketing ploy that may skirt around the parameters of decency but the fact that it is a registered trademark means it can be legally displayed.

Have some decency woman. By all means wear a singlet in your trailer trash park but not on an airline.

But isn't Death Star just a local bus service to the skys???

Good God

Everybody take a deep breath.

OK

The tatoo was of two consenting adults showing affection.

If you are easily offended by such things I suggest you move to northern Pakistan.

PS calling people with Tattoo's "trailer trash" displays your own ignorance.

Tattoos do NOT equal trailer trash. Some can be tasteful and totally non-offensive. OK, I'll retract the TT reference, but stay tuned to an upcoming Jerry Springer episode "Them planes caused a stink coz of my x-rated ink."

The introduction has apparently been written and I have it on good authority it will be:

"Many of us will recall Herve Villechaize, 'Tattoo' from TV's Fantasy Island exclaim his excitement about the impending arrival of a planeload of visitors. Well now it seems that the opposite is not true. Some planes are not so welcoming of tattoo, especially when they display images of 'adult' fantasies....................."

I prefer the article on the SMH site here which even shows part of the tattoo in question: http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/tatts-airraising/2006/02/06/1139074171403.html

A tattoo is no different to clothing.

If an airline finds it offensive (and that can be the Cabin Supervisor or by general rule) then the passenger wearing it will be refused flight until it is removed or covered. Prudish or not, refusal to obey an instruction from Cabin crew is an offence.

I think the Jet* crew may have gone too far, but I also think the lady complaining may not be telling everything in the story (oh, how unusual!)

Bra/singlet straps can move during a normal day. How does the lady in question know that her tattoo was covered so that it wouldn't cause offense?

Just another media beatup over very little methinks. She will get compo (probably undisclosed by Jet*). She will probably even appear on Today Tonight and become famous in Mackay.

Yay. Congrats to her.

Lol I doubt Jetstar will be offering any compensation. They'll just send her a generic, pre-written response to her complaint as they do to everyone else. Nobody from Jetstar complaints will ever take her call so they can play "back and fourth" with letters until she gets sick of the unconstructive responses. Really, quite a good way to fight off complaints.

This is coincidental to a very amusing column in the Curious Mail Filler Mag on the weekend by Mike O'Connor about the quality of apparel worn on todays aircraft - apart from the odorous qualities of some pax.

Beats me why tattees have a passion to stain their bodies (for arts sake?) generally where it can only be seen by those following. Teachers used to say something about attention seeking....

However, as posters have reminded us - it was on Deathstar, so who cares?

Is it just me or are most Australians uptight and lacking a sense of humor?

I agree. It seems we are becoming like the LOTFAP over things like this. Maybe it's something to do with that little *rse-licker at the top.

Yada Yada, you either have no idea of human anatomy or have said something about the Prime Minister of the country that has no place in these forums.

If the former feel free to express your personal proclivities in the manner you wish. If the latter keep your political opinions to yourself.

Emoticons do not trivialise your comments.

tatto jetstar passenger

The most suprising aspect of this story? It appears Jetsatr let her use the jacket without charge. Surely a Jetstar first, something for free! :)

Sorry for offending you, sully. I think you know it was the latter, and it was meant to be funny. :( I guess your post in response helped make my point. I'll edit that post if you really are that offended.
