Article: Qatar Airways’ Bizarre Daily Melbourne-Adelaide Flight

There is whole pages about the reasons on other threads

I think @jayzeff wants to know what the government's reasons are for limiting QR to 28 weekly flights into SYD, MEL, PER and BNE, and up to 7 weekly flights via one of those ports to another city.

It's in pretty much everyone's interest except Qantas that they be allowed to add more flights, but the Air Service Agreement doesn't allow for it. The Australian government could change this but won't, and it hasn't really explained why not.

I don’t think it’s in SQ/EK/EY or any other airlines interest either - nor any airline considering entering the market.

The Australian government could change this but won't, and it hasn't really explained why not.
And nor does it have to, to be frank. If you think this is just about Qantas you’re missing the big picture.

Yep, indeed that’s the distinction. While I agree from the wording that might be in contention but I think we all (including Mattg) do appreciate the difference.

The point is you can’t say it just benefits Qantas when it actually benefits all current and prospective carriers.

Qantas is a bit player on the European routes. This will help other airlines far more than QF - QF doesn’t have that many seats to sell compared to others and considering it’s the only local carrier it can probably continue to sell them at a premium whist other airlines with far more seats will be much more sensitive to the QR expansion.

I don’t actually think this has anything to do with aviation, but just pointing out the flaws in that argument even if you insist it does.

15 years ago, the limit was 7. It's been increasing by 7 every 3 years or so. It was increased from 21 to 28 shortly after the Australian border reopened early last year.

I will be flying the dreaded DOH-MEL-ADL in October and will give any recent updates/changes and also the service offered between MEL-ADL.
Im also doing in October ADL-MEL-DOH just to get couple extra hours in business class. On way back DOH-ADL economy.

Yes, I'm doing ADL-MEL-DOH in a few weeks. Morning departure from ADL, a nice couple of hours in MEL for lunch at the QF F lounge, then onwards. Quite a contrast with the reverse flight :(

Grab a quick coffee or brekky in the ADL VA lounge because from what I’ve been told you get a meat pie on the ADL-MEL leg 🤣

Flying from ADL-DOH, was originally on the ADL-MEL-DOH flight but I changed over when availability appeared. Had a phone call from Qatar ADL Airport saying my flight and the other (ADL-MEL-DOH) from ADL are both oversold in QSuites and if I would like to fly domestically on their dime (as it should be) to MEL in J earlier in the day and go on the direct MEL-DOH QSuites flight as I would still be arriving at a similar time. I politely decline as the reason I changed in the first place was to go direct. The lady was very nice though.

Needless to say I will get to the Airport 3 hours on the dot when they open just in case.

I have a fully paid ticket on QSuites ADL-MEL-DOH in 3 weeks. I chose not to pay extra for seat allocation. After reading about oversold in QSuites I checked to see if seats were available but no map instead seat allocation at check in needed. What is the chance it is over oversold and I dont get a QSuites ? Given I check in at Adelaide do you keep the same seat after the Melbourne stop?
