I would say that both Qantas and Virgin would very keen for us to spend our points on gift cards if they are such poor value. This gives them a very nice margin and removes a lot of points/value from their balance sheets. One gives them a boost to the P&L and the other a boost to the balance sheet. A real win/win for both airlines. if they can get people to regularly spend their points on gift cards rather than stockpile for flight rewards, happy days.
 
Well now that I know gift card redemptions are poor value, I will out smart them at their own game - “because I can”. I’m gonna redeem my points for gift cards, and then buy a couple of toasters from Myer. That’ll learn ‘em.
