Article: Live Music in the Qantas Club

Oh spare me. It would be enough to not use the club.... I avoid cafes when they have singers, usually doing loud, poor cover versions, as it is totally distracting. I know lots of people enjoy it but, that's a No from me.....

Guess they prefer the sounds of screaming kids and roudy businessmen.

Airline lounges on Friday afternoons are never quiet.

On the strength of this small - and no doubt statistically unrepresentative - sample size, I'm guessing that Qantas didn't socialise this idea with a focus group of lounge members 🤣

I think AFF is generally an older audience.

Perhaps if we had an AFF Discord channel…

I'd rather the lounges stop making boarding calls and final boarding calls. Silent lounges in that respect is the way to go. Music whatever, rather that then listen to the people yelling into their phones on speaker.

It’s outdated now with group boarding. If you wait for the boarding call you will likely have missed you boarding group at the gate, unless they do the despised practice of making a boarding call in the lounge when it’s actually not boarding.

Either way it makes the boarding call redundant.

Get the basics up to scratch then move onto the fancy stuff.

Because having music in the lounge is going to distract kitchen staff?

The phrase “walk and chew gum” comes to mind.

Really? Didn't cross your mind that 'we' may prefer a more relaxing environment all round? You know, like Qantas advertises:

“a quiet environment away from the bustle of the airport”.

Odd comment. No, because I'd prefer management provide decent food & bev (which will cost more) rather than adding expense of the musicians. Not a difficult concept, really. But you go to the Qantas Club and groove along on a Friday arvo; I mean, thats what people do, isn't it? Maybe they'll introduce karaoke ...

Or just ordinary conversation with the hearing challenged. It was impossible to talk to my parents when the Newcastle pub band kicked in. Not impressed

Maybe it would work better if they themed the songs? For example...
  • "Come Fly With Me" – Frank Sinatra
  • "Learning to Fly" – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
  • "Jet Airliner" – Steve Miller Band
  • "Vertigo" – U2
  • "Free Fallin’" – Tom Petty
  • "Should I Stay or Should I Go" – The Clash
  • "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" – Beastie Boys
  • "Right Here Waiting" – Richard Marx
  • "Leaving on a Jet Plane" – Peter, Paul and Mary
  • "The Passenger" – Iggy Pop
  • "Homeward Bound" – Simon & Garfunkel
  • etc etc
And perhaps a few that should never be played under any circumstances such as Everly Brothers’ “Ebony Eyes”.

Have you been to the SYD QP on a Friday afternoon? I’m sure you have. It’s neither quiet or relaxing. It’s bustling.

In any case it’s a massive lounge, you can always sit in a different area. They wouldn’t pipe the music throughout the lounge.

It’s not odd. The cost for these C grade bands is in the vicinity of $500, perhaps 1K if they’re really good. That extra budget wouldn’t touch the sides In the food budget. I have a friend that does it, the pay is not great. And he does same well known establishments such as the Broncos.

It’s similar comments in the data breach thread, that Qantas shouldn’t be sending out press releases, they should focus on sending emails out. In an organisation of thousands they can (and should) do many initiatives simultaneously. They shouldn’t be discouraged on making improvements in any area just because it’s not the area that bothers you.

Perhaps Qantas should be spending the money (and more) on improving the security of their (and their contractors') data systems, amongst other things, like decent food.

I can't imagine why they have done this, I just hope it can't be heard in the business lounge. Surely not a vote winner for Qantas? Makes me a little apprehensive for the future of the airline if this is what they think is important.

What makes you think that it's an improvement? And a "C" grade band doesn't sound that great. If you're going to have live music, why not light classical, by a professional ensemble. That would go down better perhaps. But the best solution, IMO, is not to have live music at all. Saves money and offends less people.

I don’t mind people arguing against if it’s not their cup of tea, but arguing against it “because they should be doing something else” is just a silly argument IMO.

By C grade band I mean your standard non-CBD pub band.

I think QF has had instrumental music before for Christmas.
