OK guys. It is time to get back on the trolley so to speak. I have a meeting in the UK for 3-4 days next year and I am trying to work out how to make that into a RTW type trip for the same price.

My base price for comparison is the base fare I have been quoted of $9,800 for syd-hkg-lhr-bkk-syd including stops in HKG and BKK (I plan to meet with my team there). I might also try and squeeze a day in DEL as well to visit the business there which will increase my base cost for comparison.

At the same sort of time there is a professional conference in Atlanta that I would like to attend...

Soooo the question is - can I manage to make a SYD-LHR-SYD into a RTW trip for a similar price (the conference costs comes from a different budget so not a consideration).

Any thoughts on a practical way to do this?

My initial thought is an ex-NZ DONE4 along these lines:

SYD-AKL I will come back to this in a second

AKL-hkg-bkk-del-lhr-lca-lhr-jfk,lga-atl-dfw-nrt-syd-mel-syd-akl (well it wouldnt be me if I didnt make it a little interesting).

Is there a cheaper option than this?

I could roll the syd-akl cost into another trip possibly or at least have part of teh cost offsetting the cost of a syd-mel-syd trip. In addition I could really use the final syd-akl flight for another trip to AKL the following year.

Any thoughts?

I think I talked myself into it as I typed...

I am now trying to work out a way to combine multiple trips into a number of fares that can be suitably nested.

I know I will have multiple syd-mel-syd trips next year. I know we will be going to NZ in the year at some point.

So when considering some nesting (working on the assumption that I am "happy" to start my trip in whY) can anyone work through the logic for me of how I can combine tickets and trips?

Cheers

Does OW fly BKK-DEL (I can't find any, doesn't mean I'm right)?

If not, you've got a segment up your sleeve, and may have to go BKK-HKG-DEL instead for example.

I thought about that - the only problem I found (apart from explaining why I need to go to Fiji...) was getting from Fiji to HKG.

There is an extremely easy way to get less than $10K ai.

Just travel in WHY. :)

Not sure how you can get less than $10K ai for a RTW let alone the base price without taxes is already in excess of that amount.

I think ex-NZ would be the way to go in terms of being within budget, and easiest to justify.

(apart from explaining why I need to go to Fiji...) was getting from Fiji to HKG.

Global Explorer is only product that can be purchased ex-Fiji, but can include Air Pacific, so could go via AKL to HKG .... doesn't help explain why you need to go to Fiji though .....

I think there is a 10% discount on all OW products/fares bought/ticketed by early (3rd?) November, so certainly now is the time to be planning and purchasing.

I am doing a similar exercise now. Need to go to Paris in Oct and try to do a RTW to visit some relative in the US. I found exNZ DONE4 airfares a little bit cheaper.

I would avoid any flights longer than 4hrs to or from Fiji as Air Pacific is quite bad especially when it comes to J class.

Have you looked at Star Alliance RTW products?

Sorry I forgot about the OW bit.

I just went to the OW website and saw the 10% discount promo running from 26 Aug for 10 weeks.

A couple of follow ups on this.

If I plan to book ex-AKL can that be done through an Australian TA or do I have to do it through an NZ based TA?

In order to "avoid" the cost of a SYD-AKL ticket I am thinking of nesting this in a planned trip. Does this logic work (rough dates used):

Tix 1 (in whY) - syd-akl (26 May) akl-syd (30 Aug)

Tix 2 (DONE4) - akl-hkg-lhr-usa-hkg-syd (26 May through to 8 Jun) syd-akl (15 Aug)

Does that logic work?

Could I also do the DONE4-syd (stop) syd-mel-syd (stop) syd-akl?

Cheers

In my experience, all that should be fine.

However, in regard to SYD-MEL-SYD, There's a new rule regarding travel in the country of origin. However, this should not apply, but it could cause a headache if you had been originating in Oz.
1. Maximum two stopovers permitted in the continent of origin of which a maximum of one stopover is permitted in each direction in the country of origin.

Yes the new wording in the xONEx rules creates some problems.I am switching the next trip to a Globalex as still only 2 stopovers but no restriction as to when.An extra $A1000 but a couple of J sectors would cost more than that.
Ex NZ the Global product in J is just scraping under the $A10000 but as said dearer than the DONE4.
