Are you using AI / ChatGPT for travel planning and while travelling?

I feel bad about the power consumption required for such trivial matters.

You probably shouldn't - trivial inferencing like this would be a tiny percentage of that power draw, most of it goes into the massive parallel training that goes on constantly, backed with billions of VC money, aiming for technical superiority, and that's going to happen regardless of the AI cat pictures being generated.

It's a billionaire's p*ssing contest and none of our moral compasses are going to change that, unfortunately

I tried using ChatGPT for an itinerary for my partners Schengen visa application, fed all the details, dates, accommodation, flights, etc. gave it specifics of what we wanted to do. It was a dog's breakfast that took as much time editing into something concise with all the provided details as to write it out from the beginning.

I've been using chatgpt for a while (and other models for coding), and have the pro plan - I have to say, it's an absolute life-changing blessing.

I've found it really good to give ideas for itineraries for holidays and even simpler things like hikes locally. Something which used to take hours and hours of research now takes a couple of minutes, it's the biggest time-saver ever made.


I've actually had an idea to build an AI-first travel planner, basically like the travel planners that exist now, but it will come up with research on iteneiries you want based on your preferences, etc.

Where I see most people (especially older demographic) falling over is prompt engineering. It's quite the skill to learn how to come up with the best prompts and context, and it can in itself take a while. Since I'm in the tech industry I'm very exposed to the fact that most people are just not very tech savvy, so I imagine this might be a good idea.

Any thoughts?

@SCM I imagine many others (e.g. travel agents) have a similar idea but I'm sure many on AFF (including myself) would be willing to test drive your AI-travel planner. I've read on various blogs that Google Flights has an AI component but it does not seem to be available in Australia as yet.

She is a Thai national so just a standard Schengen 1 to 90 day tourist visa
