I am travelling SYD/JNB in mid March and read a while back that QF are installing A380 type suites in selected routes to JNB/LAX/DFW/LHR on 747 aircraft.
The current 747 old F class is pretty "daggy" compared to ther F classes on other arilines?

Advice appreciated!

Are you sure? First is being REMOVED from 747's during refits. My understanding is the only A380's will have F going forward.

You should try the 8 course degustation menu before you say that. I find the existing QF F very acceptable especially 4A. The F crews are fantastic. Haven't flown QF A380 F yet. It looks somewhat plastic and not as cosy as QF 747 F. I'll miss QF 747 F when it goes. Don't like the enclosed F suites that Singapore and Emirates have, especially the fake plastic wood. That your coats hang at your feet in Emirates F is annoying as is the lack of overhead lockers that forces your rollaboard into a small space at the side of your feet. I'll take QF 747 F any day. Nice PJs, Penfolds Grandfather Vintage Port and lambs wool doona sure helps the sleep.

Will need to research where I read the "news" but was sure it was on AFF.

Have been on Emirates/Cathay/AA/BA/Etihad ( AA just last week from PVG/ORD) in F.

I concur about QF food (generally of a high standard, but have had some disappointing feeds as well). I prefer the Emirates and a shower! I like trying wines that I cant get in Australia on other airlines as well. Others also off limo service either end that QF dont! QF F class IFE on a 747 (10inch screen) is unacceptable, given 17-23 inch on others, Suites make you feel special. Even AA old F seats are better than QF. Will be on A380 SYD/LAX in Feb so prefer that (especially how quiet the plane is). best staff experience is cathay

anyway, am I correct about the refit for QF 747's on special routes?

Found this comment on AFF at following post

A380 is a definite , followed by a 777 . Both aircraft much quieter & open . I try and avoid the 747 where possible now , especially those on QF . They are looking so tired & dated. It will be interesting to read some feedback on what people think of the QF 747-400 interior refit to A380 look & feel are like, that they are currently undertaking with their fleet. Am I correct in saying that one is already in operation from BNE>LAX ?

You are indeed correct. The first re-fitted 747 with first removed has recently entered service on flights to the US, think DFW in the first instance. Only the 12 A380's now delivered* will have first.
(* if there are not 12 now there will be 12 in the Qantas fleet within a month or two)

Does that mean there will no longer be first on a 747 unless it is the old seats?

Yup that is the case. And the plan moving forward is to remove the 747 from the fleet and only operate A380 long haul with the new A380 to be delivered without F seats :(

Yup, First is being progressively removed from all QF 744. In a year or three the only QF First will be available on 388's.

Note the lay flat¹ Skybed Mk 2 will be installed in "place of" the old First seats on those 744 that Qantas will continue to operate - business class service only however.
