Are areas beside a galley actually dangerous for pax to mingle?

maybe they just didn't want two passengers standing chatting becoming 4, 6, or 8 passengers standing chatting.

Who knows I guess? We were trying to do the right thing too. One of us in J, the other in Y. Where to meet?

But on reflection, being told that's there's nowhere at all on the whole A330 was a bit over the top!

I guess that's the crux of your issue. You could have tried the back door perhaps, where passengers do tend to congregate and help themselves to drinks etc. There isn't really a lounge on A330s for the purpose of socialising, so they weren't under any obligation to provide space.
