Apple Airtags

After losing my house keys, I bought an AirTag to attach to my replacement keys.

I’ve now lost and subsequently found my replacement keys 3 times, all thanks to the AirTag !
the bigger problem I now have is when the panic sets looking for car keys in a hurry, is remembering that I have Airtags on them.

Interesting feature update

It’s a nice feature but will it work in SYD? Mine show me where they are pretty much anywhere else except when passing through SYD with a checked bag. The airtag reports it is still at the airport I left from until it gets on the carousel at the final destination.
I find the tracking offered by Qantas to be pretty basic so still use the airtags for reassurance.

Maybe all the Qantas bag handlers have android phones? Once on the carousel, the air tag connects to hundreds of passenger iPhones. 😉

Nothing to do with location and everything to do with nearby bluetooth signal to an Apple device

I find some aircraft / airports seem to work better (for want of a better phrase) to see your bag has moved from checkin, on to some holding point, to near aircraft and then “with you” ie very close by.

Seeing something like “Your Luggage was last seen 2000kms away 5 hrs ago” is usually a good sign that it’s been sitting in the plane hold for that last 5 hrs.

As above, a lot of that has to do with how many Bluetooth enable iDevices are in kooee. If luggage is manually loaded, you’re more like to see it “onboard”. I assume some aircraft/airlines place luggage in containers? Because you just don’t get pings at all and your bag was last seen “5 hrs ago”.

If it says “5mins ago” and still where you departed - then get worried!

I've noticed that the Airtag batteries last about one year. So being the efficient traveller I removed the batteries in my suitcases when I'm not travelling.

Well now I can't find one of them that I put sans battery. It was last seen as at the date of my last return. Annoying but it will be found.

I wonder what it sounds like in the baggage room on a quiet night. A small orchestra of Air tags playing their tunes as they move around. But the baggage rooms are pretty noisy I suppose, might not hear them.

I have a few Air Tags and it's been helpful a few times. The other day I had to get a hold of my partner, but she forgot her phone at home when she took the kid to the park, and I didn't know which park. So I just tracked the car to the park she went to and drove over there.

I've never had a bag go missing whilst traveling, which makes me a unicorn I know, but I had put tags in each suitcase now

This development looks good

Now it’s about to get easier to track down a piece of lost luggage, with airlines and airports joining the hunt using the AirTag’s real-time location finding tech.

Apple is working with Qantas to allow AirTag users to temporarily share the location of an AirTagged bag with the airline, based on an update to its iPhone software due for release in early December (just in time for the summer holiday travel surge).
