Apple Airtags

I swaer the airtag in my carry on is crying every time I open my bag as it is missing the phone I destroyed.

Folks bag Apple but for this happy user, the seamless product integration offers a lot of security and convemience

For DrRon...Absence of one link in the (apple) chain does not mitigate the functionality.
We travel with an Apple laptop, an Apple ipad, two apple iphones.. and now the watch..that is a lot of interconnected security

šŸ¤£ just more stuff to lose

The assumption with AirTags is that people lose AirTag attached things but never lose the device that tracks the AirTagšŸ˜‚

See posts #220 and 221, but keep on with that silly (and incorrect) argument if you wish ... . Oh ... šŸ¤£ I guess.

Plus its not just my stuff that tracks my devices - its the iThing 'cloud'.

Good luck with finding that bag once it disappears into the airline maw ...

If you're not an Apple user like me, there is an alternative for Android users. I have just bought 2 GEGO GPS trackers from this American company's website. Cost in AUD was 290 approx including delivery. Obviously selling lots of them since they won't ship the new batch until August 25. These work on the 4G network. I bought the first iteration of the GEGO - the Lugloc tracker some years ago for travel and it worked really well wherever we were. The Luglocs are now out of date since they relied on the 3G networks. The GEGO tracker requires either a monthly or yearly subscription for use. I think they're a bit pricey but what is the cost of the inconvenience of lost luggage that no-one appears to be able to find. Why You Need to Buy GEGO Tracker | Always Locate What You Love | GEGO. May be worth a look.
Eesh that costs more than replacing my luggage!

I'm not an Apple user ... don't really want to pay subscription fees ... guess it's chipolo?

Tile gives 1 free month subscription, and if you only check luggage a few times a year just do monthly subscription when needed. The free version also works fine, the subscription just gives extra functionality which you may not need.

The trackers that use gsm network (rather than gps and Bluetooth like Tole and Apple tags) require subscriptions for the sim card as its basically a roaming mobile phone service (and technically should not be on duringa flight).

Do you have to pay a subscription fee if you donā€™t have an iThing? I wasnā€™t aware. I only have an iPhone and it just works for me. I have a Chipolo in my wallet , hooked into my Apple ā€˜find itā€™ app and it gives a few flaky results. Such as saying that itā€™s away for me when my wallet is tucked away in my pocket.

I believe OfficeWorks (and some other retailers) stopped stocking Air Tags because of the type of batteries used, even though the Air Tags comply with all current Australian standards for the design of such products, and they stock other items that use similar batteries.
If they don't carry them, I'd suspect it's simply because they got a better mark up with other devices.
So apple airtags helps locating objects with your phone. What about if you lose the phone?
Then buy a new phone. The tags still happily work, and can be tracked over the internet (unless you've lost your computer). We have a totally Apple household, and everything is tracked by everything.
well the only subscription fee is
1) iCloud
2) recurrent upgrades of apple hardware with the latest and greatest
iCloud is free unless you want extra storage. Whilst I do have online storage, it's not with Apple.

Seriously, that's simply your choice.

I ordered my AirTags via Qantas and the Apple Store last Monday and received confirmation email the next day. Yesterday I received an email from QF advising they are tracking the Apple order, and this morning they were delivered by courier. A well packed small box with the four lozenges inside, engraved as requested. So only a six working days between ordering and receiving. Now to read the instructions! The email says points earned will turn up in several weeks. I'm a happy camper!

Sorry I meant that as I don't have an iThing so airtags are out, don't want to pay subscription so Tile is out :)

Though I've since become aware there is a free version for Tile.

You dont need a subscription for tile, its optional.

You can track your device for free without a subscription.

Also if you decide to subscribe first month is free and can pause subscription when not travelling. $3.99 a couple of times a year is worth the peace of mind imo, ymmv.

The other android opti9ns like chipolo dont perform as well on independent testing.

Interesting phenomena with Airtags flying into Sydney recently. We had wi-fi, so tracking in flight was possible. I have tags on my checked bag, wallet, laptop and keys, the last 3 with me in the cabin.

After hitting the main runway, my bag appeared to be a fair few miles behind us:

As we taxied to the gate, it had caught up a bit

Anyone theorise what might be happening here? Obviously on approach and taxing, all pax and their phones are in the same positions so signals and reception should all be the same. I did take other screenshots at various times, and the above aren't just random distortions.

Looks like it did a sneaky Marry Poppins exit to dispense a spoon full of sugar before catching up againā€¦!

Sorry, I saw MP last night at Pyrmont RSL after ā€winningā€œ the lottery.
