Will be having 3 days in Rome in August 2015, just wondering if anyone knows the best way to get a good apartment. ie: reliable websites etc for looking for apartments and where are the best locations. Are the Campo de Fioro and the Trastevere areas good?
With thanks, Gaye

Sorry, forgot the second part of your question. We stayed for a week at the Piazza Novona. I think we would stay in that area again as we could walk to all the sights we wanted to see, and there were alley ways parallel to the Piazza with great restaurants, cheaper prices and better quality than the restaurants in the Piazza itself.

Hope that helps and happy hunting!

Thanks for that, Bam71, I was looking in that area and the Campo de Fiori area, so that gives me a bit of confidence as I didn't really have a clue.

Twice we have stayed in the Vatican area & were happy with our decision-was a while back though

Thank you for that. Just trying to suss out the best area to be in as we're only there for 3 days after a cruise and then home.

Shame you only have 3 days as you will need 1 for St Peters and the Vatican museum alone (thats if you rush). Most of the sites are within 30-40 mins walking distance of the Vatican - Colosseum, Forum, Tevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona ( lots more) so it shouldn't really matter where you stay. Old Rome is fairly flat so it is easy to walk and nice to get lost.
You can go for a traditional hotel or a family owned one (you actually stay at their residence) we did this which was cheaper (and grungier) which left us lots of money for great coffee (practically impossible to find a bad coffee) and good food.
Our Hotel was 2 streets from the Trevi Fountain which was a good base, close to the train station ( Barberini ). All depends on your budget. Have fun - wish i was going too!

Look up your local Dante Alighieri society. You'll find quite a few students and members own apartments in Italy. They are a good source of trusted rentals from italophiles.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, we live in the bush, No Dante Alighieri society of any Italians either. Any other suggestions would be welcome. Thank you.

We stayed just immediately to the north of the Colosseum.

Via del Garofano1, Rome City Centre (colosseum) 00184
(Cut and paste into Google Maps). See HERE

It was a great area:

* well priced
* many cafes/ restaurants to choose from (not the Tourist traps opposite the Colosseum or other main sights) in the streets nearby that the locals frequent
* walking distance of most of the main sights
* underground train stations nearby..so can get further afield including The vatican..and the main train station if getting a fast train in or out of Roma

Myself and my wife stayed in Margutta 54 in rome, 2 min walk to the spanish steps but it out of the way of all the tourist routes and is on a spectacular cobble stone street. It is a boutique hotel that is actually all apartments, very handy. The only hotel amenity is the doorman/concierge. Will be going back for sure
