ANZ booking on QF to earn with Velocity

I’m looking at flights back from Queenstown in September and came across an Air New Zealand domestic flight to auckland, connecting to a Qantas flight to Brisbane and was wondering if I booked this combination, would I be able to credit the ANZ flight to Velocity?

The way I see it is there’s only one lounge in ZQN and that’s operated by AirNZ, so if I took NZ620 to AKL I’d be able to check-in at the premium counters, get lounge access and earn points, then switch terminals and check-in for my Qantas flight QF126 at the premium counters, use the lounge and earn points.

Would that work, does anyone know?

Are you booking a formal connection? I ask because I can't find any NZ flights which connect with QF!

If you aren't considering a direct ZQN-BNE flight (to earn status credits for example), then why not consider connecting onto a Virgin Australia or Pacific Blue operated service? For example, ZQN-CHC-BNE (where, assuming your either a Velocity Gold or Virgin Australia lounge member, you can use the NZ Lounge in both ZQN and CHC), or even ZQN-AKL-BNE (again, accessing both NZ lounges). If you wanted to fly to Australia on NZ, you could connect through Sydney with a ZQN-SYD-BNE service (using NZ lounge in ZQN and then visit the refurbished DJ lounge in SYD while waiting for your domestic flight).

I was looking for the cheapest and easiest solution to airports that I’d transit through. My chosen date doesn’t have direct BNE flights, other than an AirNZ flight in economy with no food which doesn’t sound appetising, and is actually about double the price of the QF/ANZ combos.

I’d rather keep away from SYD, as it’s a PITA to get between terminals and the alternative, which sounds much better in my mind is a NZD$378 flight on QF through MEL, however with the ANZ flight up to AKL and then QF onwards being only a tad more, I wondered if that would give me the best of both worlds: priority check-in, lounge access (at there’s a Koru Club in ZQN) and points.

I'm actually not sure if this will work .. so far as I know, the FQTV is a per-PNR thing .. though if you can get the NZ PNR from QF, you might be able to change the FQTV on that to reflect your DJ FQTV number (without upsetting your QF number in the QF PNR). Let us know how you get on.

If ease of transit is your goal, then there is a NZ$423 option with Air New Zealand which connects through Christchurch. The ZQN-CHC sector has a number of options (the latest being 12:55PM), all connecting onto the 3:25PM departure from CHC to arrive in BNE at 5:15pm. This would reduce your travel time to 4hrs, 20min. The CHC connection option means no need to transit between terminals, and both ZQN and CHC have an Air New Zealand lounge.

The below is a screen capture of the Pacific Blue website (where you can directly enter your Velocity membership number)



Obviously, NZ$423 is a little bit more than the QF option, and this doesn't include a packaged meal, however Virgin Australia (read Pacifc Blue) Guests who travel on Air New Zealand serviecs do receive in flight gate-to-gate in-flight entertainment (where fitted, excluding new release movies).

I was traveling on a QF flight out of ZQN and whilst there is no QPUB there, the lady at the checkin counter gave me a piece of paper that granted me access to the Koru club, QF must have an arrangement with NZ there. I'm not sure if they give it out as a matter of course but I casually asked where the qantas club was located (knowing there was none) and she told me that they didn't have one and I could use the koru lounge instead.

Yup I did see that flight too, all on a sliding scale getting more expensive, but not considerably so, and it is an option, however I’d be more focused on the dual ANZ/QF option if nothing more than to wonder if it would work.

I also need a further 20 QF SC to re-qualify for Gold and this would do so, as I have no other QF travel booked at this stage. I’m flying over there on Pacific Blue as it is, and realise I won’t be getting lounge access there

I have no real aversion to flying it all on DJ, or going via CHC, I just wondered if anyone had tried to credit an ANZ flight booked through the QF website to Velocity, now that it’s possible. I also wondered if being a Velocity Gold member gave me priority check-in and lounge access, but I’m guessing it does… even if booked through Qantas.

It’s interesting you say that, as policy there has changed a lot over the years. I remember as a QP member with no other status I was once given a NZD$50 voucher for use at the food court, then the following year, exact same membership without status, got nothing.

Perhaps it depends on who serves you, however I assume a DJ Gold travelling on Air NZ would qualify for access regardless, now there’s a partnership.
