If you need 40,000 QFF points then $295 is not an expensive price to pay.

I joined the recent promo for the Westpac one the other week and it was $125 with 40000 points. Earn on the Amex was the same but the MasterCard was a bit better. However I have a 1 point per $1 Visa so can't see me using this MasterCard.

This was my first points earning card and I have kept it.. I would go for the 40,000 points offer and you can always get the fee waived in subsequent years by threatening to cancel...

Just clicked through to check this out and FYI for those thinking this sounds like a good idea, the offer appears to have been extended as below (copied straight from the site):

I have the card and it has been pretty good (it was a stop gap when the AMEX Plat Charge Card earn rates were changed). Though we do supplement it with an EDR Mastercard to get the 1:1 for non AMEX transactions. The main drawback is that it is a direct earn card. I'm thinking the AMEX Platinum Edge might be worth a try (along with keeping the EDR Card) as it allows points to be held outside of any FF program.

I have the plat card but because i put a quite a bit of my spending through it, when i called up one time to say i was thinking of changing to a new card they now give it to me for $50 a year or so... Think after i take a holiday in Apr for which i will use it for the free insurance i might take out another plat card and cancel this one, get the 40K points then try and get them to refund most of that $295... The only problem with loyalty year after year is you get no bonuses... You get more love if you're new to them...

I have had this card for like 10 years.

Rang them a few months ago and said I was going to cancel and get the Earth Black, because it had $40k sign on points and better visa earn and asked what they could offer me.

Rang me back and offered 40k points because I'd been there so long.
