The biggest cost is the insurance so make sure you take up what you need. I haven’t tried Costco but we are business members at Costco.

We have used Arguscarhire trawler site for quite a few years. Recently we tried Sixt to get a vehicle. They let us drive a BMW sedan instead of a Toyota Camry and we had some issues with some of the quirky controls. Had to get our parking concierge at Cove to explain some of them.
My sons often use Lyft and/or Uber to get to events.
The fall of the AUD won’t help your expenses in the US at the moment.
Big Blue Bus in Los Angeles and the light rail is very reasonably priced.
Do watch out for a drop charge if you plan to return a hire car to a different location.
We have driven hire cars in California since 1978 and it is short rights and long lefts when you drive there.
Have your passport and drivers licence with you when you are hiring.
I never drive on the day of arrival as I drink alcohol on the flight. You can go directly to jail if you get picked up over the limit.
Now Bud Light and equivalents are merely low in carbs and are normal strength alcohol.
