Mrs Pineapple came over to visit briefly when I was working in Kabul and we checked out the cost of cover for a few days’ visit. I had cover with a bespoke insurer as part of my contract and we asked the contract insurer. They advised the minimum they issue a policy for was £1500 so we went for self insurance. At the time the FCO travel advisory for Kabul was along the lines of reconsider your need to travel, although DFAT’s was a blanket do not travel.
Googling trawled up a couple of these specialists and as with any insurance you look at what they cover and whether it works. One that I found offered up to £2500 if you get kidnapped when I’d rather not be kidnapped in the first place. So my advice would be to evaluate the risks that makes your destination and consider how you might mitigate them. We primarily relied on having good security .
