The dynamic in my relationship is that the gentleman accrues the points and I work out how best to spend them! So the gentleman has a pot of points we are looking to use to fly DXB-MEL in J and there is currently availability. Unfortunately, the Qantas booking engine won't let you book one way ASAs from DXB-MEL (only returns from MEL-DXB). So the gentleman is going to call up today to try and book them. I have given him all the info I think he needs, including
1) they will try and sell you a classic award but you need to make sure it is an ASA;
2) he shouldn't have to pay the booking fee as you can't do it yourself on line.

From my reading here, the consultants may try and push him to book classic. How can we confirm it's an ASA ticket? Anything else I should be aware of?

I'm not going to be there when he calls up, so I want to arm him with as much info as possible to ensure we get the right booking :)

No tips as such but just wanted to say it should not be an issue booking ASAs on the phone, sadly an award assistance fee is payable which will add to the cost.

Even though you can't book it online? That's a bit cheeky

I agree, Qantas now expressly point this out:

A fee will apply to all other Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Award flights as they can only be booked through a consultant.

BTW you can book if you have his PIN!

I do have his pin. I can call up on his behalf and book the tickets for us?

The gentleman just called up and the consultant told him that ASAs can't be booked from overseas ie the starting location must be within Australia. I have certainly booked JASAs previously from both HK and Singapore. Is this right? Do they no longer allow it?

Unusual, I did an FASA last year from LAX-SYD booked on line.

Hopefully you got a consultant who didn't know what they were doing.

Concur with Hvr, tell him to HUACA.
Booked a JASA from HKG online last month.

Just spoke to a consultant who, after trying to book it, advised me that until the last bit of ACCC approval is received, QF can't sell fares ex-DXB. So I can only wait for approval and try again!
