We're off to South Africa in March (6 days in Cape Town then a Ponant cruise to Durban and onto the Seychelles) - I would like to get a SIM card for use while in Cape Town in particular (must have data) - buying one here from SIMCorner (which I have used previously for Europe and US/Canada) seems very expensive - 3GB data only SIM is $45 for 15 days !! All information I can find on this forum and TripAdvisor and Google search is quite out of date (may still be correct but is some years old).

It seems you can just buy one at any Vodafone shop - prices indicated are much less than $45 - there are warnings (on the forums) about the 'complicated' RICA process but it seems this just means showing your passport and proof of where you're staying.

So any recent experience to share? thanks.

About 2 years ago, when I flew into Johannesburg there was a Vodafone at the airport, they loaded up the SIM and I think it was around $50 AUD. This lasted me for the 2 weeks that I was there and it was sufficient, speed was good and data amount was good too. Prices and data amounts may differ now. Moral of the story is, it was very easy once you land. Hope that helps.
Following as I was planning on using Sim Corner

Hubby has Vodafone $5 roaming but have to be careful that he turns it off when we get to Vic Falls/Zimbabwe

If you buy the sim at the airport as you arrive its much easier. If you have access to wifi or can phone at certain times whatsapp or fb messenger much easier. Most S African companies also have a whatsapp contact.

Many thanks - landed in Cape Town yesterday - bought an MTM 2GB data only SIM for 1 week (all I require) for $10. This can be topped up (not sure how) - just need data for Goggle maps, WhatsApp etc when WiFi not available). Bought MTM instead of Vodaphone because there was someone at the Vodaphone desk. So far working just fine.
