do the budget airlines have pre-allocated seat plans.

Jetstar-YES. You can select your seat at the time of booking for free (exit rows cost more), or you can select your seat at webcheckin.
Virgin- YES and NO. You can select a Extra Legroom seat at booking, but you dont get to pick your seat. At webcheckin you can select your seat from the seat map. Pity that DJ dont have a seat map at the time of booking
Tiger- YES. Pay $5 and choose where you want to sit, same as Jetstar expect you pay $5.

You can ask for a window or aisle seat, or mabye which seat number you want at checkin, providing you dont checkin too late..

There is no more first in first serve on board, like what AirAsia used to do..all airlines in Oz have a seat allocated to you!

If flying a decent leg domestic sector like MEL-DRW I would take Virgin over Jetstar as I think the in seat Foxtel on Virgin is quite a nice feature even if it costs close to $10 for that length of travel. It also frees up the tray table for laptop etc and keeps the kids amused as opposed to the video unti JQ gives you on those flights.

I would take Virgin Blue over Jetstar anyday based on previous experience.
You get the pleasure of paying for all extras on both these airlines so it really depends upon what extra features you want to pay for.

The only other real differences are whether you have status with DJ or QF for lounge access or whether you prefer the JQ A320 and A330's or the DJ B737 and Embraer E170/E190.

Exit row.

I would take Virgin Blue over Jetstar anyday based on previous experience.

Personally I think JQ and DJ are pretty much the same - good solid service for no frills airlines.

Don't ignore QF when finding cheap flights. Some of the QF Red e-deals can come in cheaper than the cheapst DJ \ JQ \ TT fares. (Hard to believe I know)

Very true - this seems to be happenign with more and more regularity.

Absolutely.

QF are frequently the cheap option in the mix :!:
Last night and today I booked most of my flights for June/July. In most cases QF was cheaper than DJ as I could find availability for $79 on QF whereas the best for DJ was $85. On some of the days I wanted QF was $94 and DJ was $85 but add on $8 for luggage and $6-$12 for beer and DJ is more expensive. On some days the best fare with either was $120 which would make the DJ airfare more expensive with luggage and drink but I decided to stay in Brisbane for 2 weekends in July to save some money.

I was able to book one DJ flight at $85 as the best QF fare at the time of day I wanted to fly was $120....

Why confused, DJ,JQ,TT get a fair proportion of people who just think thats is LCC therefor QF for example won't be cheaper and they don't even bother checking.
Generally if you can plan ahead a bit QF will have something about as cheap, cheaper or not much more expensive than the others on any given day.

Indeed, today I booked a PER-MEL flight on QF. For the date/time I wanted to fly the fares were
TT - $188
QF - $189
JQ - $239
DJ - $285

(NB I do generally check the various options, and DJ does sometimes come out cheaper)

Jetstar you can pick your seats when booking but virgin you can pick a seat when you use web check in or a e-ticket machine at the airport
