Met with my SIL today who was very sad. The SA girl who was murdered through the London terrorist act was a good friend of my niece and my nephew had taken her as his date to his school formal. They met through their swimming club and my niece was her coach. My SIL posted a condolence on her family Facebook page and shortly after the Australian and News.com.au contacted her for her 'story'. She refused saying it was disrespectful to the family. Somewhat taken aback the Australian reporter then asked for the coaches name. They are only after 'their story'. And I can't help but think the media creates the environment in which terrorism thrives.

Re: Another London Terror attack - June 3rd 2017

Yes, I'm well aware that the bombing was on the anniversary of the end of the Waco siege. I didn't state that members of David Koresh's cult were right wing extremists. The Patriot movement at that time in the States (and presumably still now) saw the siege as a perfect example of the Government encroaching on the rights of law abiding Christian citizens. They didn't care that it was a cult. They were reading the Bible and that was good enough for them. The fact that it was a warped and twisted interpretation of the book of Revelations didn't seem to matter either. There are so many similarities here that it's impossible to ignore them. We haven't managed to ban radical Christianity though have we?

very sad indeed and I 100% agree that the media are certainly not without fault here.

Though a lot of folk seem to want to ban non radical Christianity.
BTW-I identify as no religion at census time.

.

So who are these lots of folks that want to ban non radical Christianity ?

Neither do I, and not just as census time. But I am more than content that those who wish to follow a genuine faith do so.

Yes, I think it is shameful the way media outlets exploit terrorist incidents.

At any time such an event happens, go to a website of any news outlet - and it story after story about the incident, an awful lot of clickbait. I make a rule of minimising my exposure, because it sickens me all the publicity the media gives the actions of these extreme criminals. I can understand the media does it - their is a thirst for information from the public - and the stories are gripping - the sad stories of the victims, the dramatic stories of the intervention, the rage fulled stories of peoples reactions to the perpetrators, the policy posturing etc. I don't think they deliberately exploit these events for commercial gain, but I am sure it helps the bottom line.

There should be a code of conduct for reporting terrorism, the way there is for reporting of suicides.

Re: Another London Terror attack - June 3rd 2017

Sorry but that I presume was the Pullitzer prize winning documentary.
You do realise that the Oklahoma bombing was on the second Anniversary of the end of the Waco siege and Timothy McVeigh said that was the reason for his hatred of the government. If you read about Waco you will find those at Waco were members of a breakaway sect of Seventh day Adventist church.
Ah yes. I can see the similarities between the Oklahoma bombing and the nonstop terrorist attacks of today.

Why do people keep trying to justify what is happening right now? Very sad.

Who has justified it John? I trust that you are not actually speaking about anyone in this thread.

Seeking to understand why terrorists do what they do, is not justifying terrorism.

The only people who try justify terrorism are the terrorists. Questioning why is not justifying it.
Not quite.

People have very short memories. Remember the celebrations in Sydney after September 11? That continues around the world today after most terrorist attacks.

Very sad to see human beings celebrating the death of another human being.

But then I'd regard them as terrorist support groups and who could become active if they chose.

I recall Americans celebrating the death of Saddam Hussain. How different the world would have been if he was still in control in Iraq.

Heaven forbid if the Saudi Royal family is brought down by whoever and replaced with something worse (Despite how bad they are). The Sunni-Shia war/rivalry that has going on since antiquity.

No, I don't remember them at all. Is there any reference to them on line?

Very little. They've done very well to erase the references online. I don't understand why.

How many Korean evangelicals or Taiwanese Buddhists are plotting attacks on Australian coffee drinkers in order to advance the cause of theocratic conquest?

How many Korean evangelicals or Taiwanese Buddhists has The West systematically bombed the S*** out of over the last 15 years for political and economic gain?

I'm not for a moment suggesting that any of these actions are justified, but we have to take a long hard look at the root cause here. It is nearly ALWAYS isolated young men who are rebelling against what they see as an oppressive regime.

Unfortunately for the idea that Islamic terrorism is caused by the west there are several inconvenient facts.
First many more Muslims are victims of Islamic terrorists. This is mainly due to sunni/shia conflicts whose history goes back to 632-well before there were any US Presidents.

Secondly there were many terrorist acts committed before even George W became president-The WTC bombing in 1993,bombing of the US Embassy Lebanon 1983 and again in 1984,the US embassies in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi 1998,Luxor massacre 1997,TWA 837 1985 and the seizure of the Grand mosque Mecca by Shiite militants killing 244 in 1979.
