The wonders of the connected world, I'm sitting in a Japanese hotel room, watching a US television station (CNN) talking to a person on London Bridge where there has been an incident, whilst posting on an Australian based internet site.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Stabbings around Borough Market too. Not in BM, but near (0.35 miles away). The news likes to frame things in a certain way. Terrorist attack is the default stance, I don't think it is.

Reports of something in Vauxhall too (used to live there), not too far away. But they're actually saying "most likely not related". It's Saturday night, people are out drinking... things do happen. Anyway, we'll see.

Car 'ploughs into 20 people on London Bridge' | Daily Mail Online

Man hunt launched for three terrorists as men with '12in hunting knives stab pedestrians' after mowing down up to 20 people with a white van amid reports of explosions in third attack in ten weeks

Live: London Bridge closed as 'van ploughs into pedestrians'

If there's any explosions, it's not on BBC on the TV right now. Daily Mail with their artistic licence....

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Enough is enough - it's been a bad couple of weeks

Re: The totally off-topic thread

To put an AFF spin on it, they're treating walk in casualties at the Andaz (Hyatt property) near Liverpool St station. Odd as it's a 20+ minute walk from London Bridge.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Senator Sam Dastyari was just interviewed on ABC24, having been dining just meters from the Borough Market attack.

Mer Police seem to have very fast response (compared to VicPol at Tullamarine last week).

Didnt take long for a politician to insert themselves into the media spotlight.

Harsh.

I'd guess ABC would be ready to interview any Australian to get an Aussie citizen's opinion - Senator probably has more twitter followers and thus would be noticed plus ABC would likely have his phone number.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I'm cringing watching BBC - as someone who wears a suit every day, it's really upsetting to see him wearing so short a jacket with his shirt extending so far past the end of the arm part.... seems like 5 inches too much of shirt.

This is true but I'd rather not see him. Nor any politician. They insert themselves into others human tragedy and take the limelight simply for all the reasons you've suggested.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Why don't they ask for my opinion instead then, I'm an Aussie in London ;)

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Sam resurrecting his political career.

22000 followers probably wont be enough to resurrect his political career but on the other hand you dont need many followers to have a successful political career.
Quid pro quo - Aussie media need aussie content but aussie politician need aussie media to distribute their content so whatever they say should be taken with a grain of salt. Random citizen commentators less salt.

True but in his own mind it might so he will be back in the spotlight again.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Certainly are, which is why I'm a bit jaded by the whole thing!
it is all becoming everyday, but we shouldn't get inured or terrified. We are planning a trip to the gorillas next year and I am deliberately adding in a Nairobi and Kenyan game reserve component. Their tourism is being affected by terrorist attacks, so I wanted to show solidarity. They are such nice people as well.
