Another Iclelandic Volcano Erupts May 2011

And it's blowing its stack again.

Iceland's most active volcano, Grimsvotn, has started erupting, scientists say.
The volcano, which lies under the Vatnajokull glacier in south-east Iceland, last erupted in 2004.
In 2010, plumes of ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano caused weeks of air travel chaos across Europe.
Officials say the latest eruption is unlikely to cause similar problems, although a flight ban has been imposed around the area.

Hopefully the BBC prediction that it is unlikely to cause problems is correct.

It looks like things are calming down (Aviation Herald):

The Icelandic Meteorologic Institute reported late May 24th that the plume of new ashes has reduced to about 2000 meters of height no longer posing a danger for aviation. The scientists are hopeful by comparing the eruption with previous events, that by weekend the eruption might cease. Only "old" ashes already in the air still hamper air traffic.

Just as well, as I'm flying JFK-KEF on 3 June.

The media are attempting to sensationalise this by comparing it to last year's events.

However, aside from being an erupting Volcano located within Iceland, the situation is rather different this time.

*This is the only phrase I remember from O level Meteorology - I have no real clue what it means but I'm sure it will have something to do with it.

I've been following FR closely, as I had a flight out of ORK during these days. I noticed today that there was no cancelled flights (as opposed to a few cancellations the 2 days previous) so looks like it should all be OK. It was mentioned on the news here that planes have been flying in certain conditions, that during the last eruption, wouldn't have been allowed to fly.

I flew out of LAX on Fri nite (US TIME) and while I was in the Tom Bradley/One World lounge there was a interesting announcement over the PA.

Seems a BA flight due to leave around 21:35 was delayed until 00:30 due to engineers having to check it for volcanic ash damage

The PA anouncement advised that the engineers had checked it, and all was ok.

Is this over reaction or just being safe? I don't know where it had come from, and can't remember where it was going to.
