Two new gates have opened at HBA as part of the expansion - 8 and 9; they will eventually become the international gates. Other gates will now be closed for refurb.

If you think 9 gates for HBA is a lot, recognise that there are regularly 5 gates occupied now, and sometimes an aircraft waiting for one (or the stairs ...), when there are delays. 7 domestic gates will be good.
I assume the new gates also means new parking positions and new equipment to service them (at the least, stairs).
When are you getting air bridges? ;)
When the airport decides to grow up? 😀 Literally....

Yes, and hopefully, yes. The stairs (sorry, also ramps) are made in N Tasmania, yet they have been short of them.

We know the answer. 'Never'. Categorically ruled out by both the previous owner and the present owners. What give the peasants something to avoid the wind and occasional rain when boarding, when they've had to do it since forever?

Wouldn't be the only international airport on the world map that wouldn't have any. ZQN comes to mind.

I guess that doesn't preclude any particular aircraft type flying to and from HBA. Important if SQ or CX want to send A350s or B787s.

A model preview of the new HBA:

I'm curious to see just how much room there is at gates for people to take a seat.

Also, I know it's a preview so it doesn't suggest it has to be, but Flight Centre at HBA? How successful is that supposed to be?

I was there this morning. (pictures)

Its shaping up pretty much per the video - at least the inside up to 0:40. Its partly an expansion and partly reno, so as they expand they move in and close bits of the old off, so the final isn't quite certain to imagine. No QP for 6 months from end of June!

The big thing will be more shops. Many more shops. And it looks like (you never know how it will finish up) there will be quite a bit more seating area, away from cafes (see 2nd pic in that link). And there is more seating near the new international gates'. So the crush in the gate lounge area should be alleviated. Unless they get greedy (HBA greedy? 🤣 ) and put yet more shops in.

More gates - 7 domestic, 2 international (which sounds ambitious!!!)

International is at one end of the terminal and the baggage reclaim (an additional belt, now 3) right at the other??. Maybe there will be another carousel for international (they do have genuine ambitions for flights to Asia - the runway can now handle wide bodies.

Dunno about the Flight Centre thing. That's the new car rental strip.

I'm more optimistic than I was when it was announced, but you never can tell with HBA.
