Once again I have had my international flights with QF changed on me, something that has happened on nearly every flight booked since Nov last year. Some of the annoyances have been minor. some have been a bit inconvenient e.g.changing flights to leave a 30 min connection from SIN-BNE to BNE(dom)-MEL on Melbourne Cup day without my authorisation, Some have just pissed me off (removing F class on a MASA I had booked in F in March from HKG) This week, they cancelled my flight from BKK-SYD on 4 November and I am now left with the following options:

1) Leave 5 hours early and fly BKK-HKG on CX614 (777) with a 3 hour layover in HKG, then fly QF128 to SYD (747). Gets me back to Sydney at 7.50am on 5 Nov.

2) Leave 4 hours early, fly BKK-SIN on 3K510 (A330) with a 1 1/2 hour connection at SIN, then fly QF82 (A330) to Syd. Gets me back to Sydney at 6.50am on 5 Nov.

3) Leave the next day on the same flight as booked - QF24 (A330). Qantas puts me up for an extra day in a hotel they select and I think I get meals as well. They cant tell me what hotel etc. Gets me back to Sydney on Thursday at 7.50am.

I am slumming it in O Class for this flight, so neither option 1 or 2 earn me any extra SC or points for the extra leg if I'm reading the new tables right, so that's not a consideration.

I will just take an extra day of leave if I choose the third option. Which option will give me the best comfort flying, taking into account aircraft and cabin class. All of them are overnighters. Or is there no difference and I'm better off having an an extra day in BKK? I have to make a decision by Monday.

I would take option 1, could not be stuffed taking another day off and moving hotels.

I'd take option 2. Faster and gets back into Syd a bit earlier. Both flights are short in real terms.

Have you been to HKG before?
Do you have any commitments that require you to be in SYD on any earlier than needed...
Personally, I would go with option 1. Yes, I do get it that some people, or most, don't like wandering like a lost person in an airport, but I am that sort of a person, I don't mind wandering around airport terminals! Remember that Tom Hanks movie?/!
Also gets you the ability to earn some FF points, by spending some QCC $.
Change some Aud$ to Hkd$ and get an airport meal (unless you get access to HKG's QP) of course, (EDIT) just saw you got QFF WP, noted, so access to QP is a yes.

Do you go to BKK for business? If so then spending an extra day for pleasure is not such a bad idea.
I would choose option 3, stay one more day and also taking the shortest route home (always preferable when flying Y).

Yes, for the AFF lounge crawl last month

No but I don't get a stopover with option 1 or 2, I only get 3 hrs at HKIA

Looking at the partner tables, O Class (Discount Economy) in CX earn no points or SC. Not quite sure what you mean by QCC$.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

No, not business, just heading up there for a short break. How does the A330 compare to the 747 in Y?

If you are tossing between options 1 and 2 then the first one is better IMO.
CX > 3K
B747 > A330
The Wing > QF SIN lounge

Just for interest is their widespread cancellation of BKK routes from Qantas - want to book for June next year but am worried that QF may discontinue that route by then

You should be able to recover points and SC's through "original routing" credit.

My understanding is they are canning Tuesday (and one other day - maybe Thursday) flights in October/November. I believe daily flights come back on in December for the school holiday crowd. Not sure what is happening long term, but I'm guessing they are just cutting the less heavily flown days from the schedule, not discontinuing the route entirely.

Your original ticket was issued way back before when (I'm assuming). So, how come flying in O on CX, for example, would not earn any SC? The old table should apply, right?

Not quite sure what you mean, could you elaborate? When I looked at the partner earning table, I did not see O booking class in the table of eligible fares for Cathay but maybe that is me just not understanding the simpler, fairer system:

You're right, I booked the original flight in February. However, I would imagine the CX flight would be at the current earning table so its simpler and fairer.

same thing happened to me. I just asked them to put me on the Emirates flight back which leaves an hour later or earlier, can't remember. On the QF codeshare.

If QF are the ones who moved you (as they are about to in this case) onto a carrier that you wouldn't normally earn points and SC's for, follow up with them asking for your ORC (original routing credit). As it is QF who moved you, you will still get the points and SC's of the original fare as a worst case scenario, even if you have to follow it up.

I'd suggest any changes would lead to the new rates applying. In any case ORC is the friend of the OP here.

They withdrew the offer of an extra day's accommodation as they had now provided alternatives. Option 1 it is then.

The product is supposed to be the same but I find the experience on the 747 far better.

From memory "O" class on CX has never earned anything on QFF. It certainly does not earn Asia Miles.

I am booking BNE-CNX for next June as well and I am hoping the A330 is cancelled on the days I am travelling and I would gladly take the offer via HKG instead.
