I need to renew my multi-trip annual travel insurance by the end of this month. I need cover for skiing, my family when they travel with me. I’m currently a QF gold flyer and have the AMEX platinum card. What are people’s views of best options.

read every word of the pdf of every policy you consider… words have meanings.. caveat emptor

In saying that you are taking out a separate annual policy, does that mean you have established that the amex platinum card cover was in itself insufficient ? I too have amex plat ( charge card ) and am looking at extended travel this year.

I looked around a while ago for annual domestic multitrip travel insurance and went with Australia Post, which I think is underwritten by Zurich. They also have international policies. These policies had a reasonable report in a recent Choice Survey along with Medibank and Amex (not credit card insurance).

I use my CBA Platinum and ANZ Black cc travel insurance for international cover. Had a look at Amex cc card insuranced cover some time ago and found this had a number of limitations (eg have to spend all expenses for trip on card, preexisting conditions limitations, cover limits etc). At least you need to read the Amex PDS very carefully. There are other threads on this. Therefore haven't bothered with Amex.

Choice Survey

When i bought single trip TI for my June trip this year (back in Sept last year) CHOICE single trip reviews recommend World2Cover TOP cover as the best policy, however they just updated their reviews in Jan, and now only recommend Good2Go The Works, InsureandGo Gold and TickTravel Top (it is actually a bit scary how far World2Cover has dropped down the list).

Its interesting that CHOICE haven't updated the annual policy reviews since May 2018 - but yes Amex Ultimate was top. If I were to do a lot of overseas travel it could be a a good option, as then the issues of conflict with CC TI would not be an issue, as it would be Amex claiming form Amex lol.

My Qantas Amex Ultimate didnt rate too well on the Choice CC TI Reviews - which is why i wouldn't rely on it for international travel, mainly due to it having a limit on medical.

Does AFF still offer a member’s deal with Covermoore? My TID quote annual went from $432, 12 months ago, to $963 this year and that was w’ a 10% discount.

If AFF doesn't give a discount Helloworld agents can.We get a 10% discount through them but we do know a quite senior person in their management.Which means we don't have to buy any travel through them.

Ok, I see that is also CoverMore. When questioned, TID said that the dollar exchange rate and increased medical costs in the USA contributed to their price rise.

I recently renewed my annual multi-trip policy (Qantas Assure underwritten by QBE) for the same price as last year ($650 for a couple, worldwide incl Aus). Just a data point for comparison.

Did the same this week - down to the exact cent. We took out a multi (family) policy with max hire car cover - $675 (policy) + $200 (HC) = $875. Interesting we get to ensure the kids for $12.5 each :)

Another reason I like QBE - you can purchase a new multi year policy months out from the expiry date of the existing policy. Others have a policy that limits this to a month or so. This is not good when you layout big dollars on trips many months out from the changeover.

But credit card travel insurance could provide equivilant cover, in my case $100, for that premium, wouldn't it? When I checked a year or two ago, some travel insurance policies provide less cover than credit card insurance. For eg with ANZ cc I get $5,000 rental vehicle excess coverage, along with unlimited medical etc

Between the two of us we have multiple CC insurance policies. My motivation to get a CC has nothing to do with securing travel insurance, I'd rather have my own policy everyday of the week. YMMV

Young whippersnappers getting good deals.. wait until y'all are old and then see the policy cost…. +++...$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$/2

At 67 years, I haven't been called a young whippersnapper for some time; but I must say it feels gooood!

As you say "could"!

Once you have pre-existing medical conditions, you find they either won't insure you at all, or load the premium to the point that you would prefer to stay home.

If you add skiing to an annual policy the price increases dramatically. It is often cheaper to buy a seperate one trip policy if going skiing.

I use BUPA global annual medical travel insurance cover. It does cover most winter sports, including skiing. I pay in GBP - about 96 GBP for annual cover. So about $180 AUD (for single cover - the trouble for families I think the cost is per person). There are some options that include other related non-medics travel insurance and these cost more.

Our travel insurance is by Chubb thru Cowden Insurance brokers. We are happy with the cover and claims experience as well as the price for our cover which is for about a dozen of us.
