Angry pax declines to Raise Reclined Seat During Service...

Choose a bulkhead, exit row, or airline that offers limited or no recline (when flying overseas).
The “limited recline” thing is mythical & was invented purely for this thread, the rest require status which I don’t have ...

(I actually think PE is the worst when it comes to recline - once the person in front has reclined it's virtually impossible to get out from the seat behind.)
It’s been 7yrs since I sampled PE, it was definitely better then; there was still room for a magazine or book & you could see the screen in front once the seat was reclined (BA & CX at least).

Limited or no recline include carriers such as Cebu Pacific, or Ryanair.

PE hasn't changed in seven years unfortunately. Maybe the recline on BA/CX wasn't so great, but on QF you're pretty much trapped if the person in front reclines.

Is this the new PE as per their 787?
I’ve certainly not read good things about that, ‘round here ...
I know I can get out of an A332 or A333 Y seat with the one in front reclined, although waking neither the person in front nor the person beside me involves a lot of slow careful triple-jointed elbow-knee movements. :)

This would be the PEY seats on the 747 and A380. In economy, getting out of the seat without disturbing the person in front should be easy - at least if sitting in the asile. You unlock and raise the armrest and just swing sideways.

No, limited recline is real. Have you flown Ryanair? Easyjet? New BA A320 NEO planes?

Not from Sydney to Hobart.
And from Gatwick to Inverness, nobody was rude enough to recline on me so I couldn't tell ...

I actually didn't know about that on our last trip to Singapore … once again, AFF informs, I only learned about it here after complaining about the gymnastics required. :)

We aren't seriously calling ryanair and easyjet "limited recline" are we?! they don't have any recline

You get what you pay for. If you buy a seta that reclines, then commonsense says that this also involves the person in front of you reclining. It would be ideal that a person does not recline in cramped areas (Y) when such things as meal service is on. But maybe the bugger in front of you is not hungry and just wants to try anything to try to rest?

The reality is that the person in front of you has as much right to getting some rest as you do to being able to read a book or watch a TV show or some-such, as well as having a meal. Because you've both got as much right, the fair thing would be some for of compromise, they get to sleep some of the time while you're lying there wide-awake wishing you were asleep, then probably around meal times you get that ability to read & eat etc back.

However AFF isn't reality, and it's safe place to b***h about Recliners … and propose solutions to the problem such as bumping-off all Recliners (with the side-effect of World Peace - it's actually a fact, check the history books, every single war throughout the existence of humans was initiated by Recliners). Or even just enjoy the imagery of cutting their hearts out with a spoon (because it hurts more /AlanRickman).

The only thing that is affected by recline is the ability to eat meals.

Anything else... watching tv, reading a book... they can all be maintained if you also recline.

The problem is when people ‘break the chain’ by refusing to recline.

Not so long ago everybody was asked to recline during the movie screenings. Then we used to have to opposite complaint... people who didn’t recline were being selfish :(

I find this crazy, obviously the recline is part of the seat feature / ticket feature. Thats like saying flat beds arent meant to be used. Its not like recline is some automatic part of a seat where physics is involved, it is obviously included by the airlines as a comfort feature, so what people are trying to say is to not use a feature the airlines has included as part of your ticket fare. And there are many airlines with different recline degrees. Try scoot or Air asia or jetstar, less recline than singapore, qantas or emirates. Air Canada is in between those groups.

Then it also depends on the type of aircraft you are in, some have more recline than others even if from the same company.

Small book maybe.
There's no room for a magazine or tablet, and the LCD screen doesn't tilt far enough upwards to see it (at least on a QF A332, A333, 717 or 738).

I have used a 10" Ipad many many times while the seat in front has done a full recline and definitely the built in LCD screen is perfectly fine to view if the seat is reclined or not. Thats odd you had those issues.

… I'm only 6'2", pretty much average these days, so it's going to be pretty much par-for-the-course for half the population.

I am from the Asian continent and 5ft 11" i didnt have the same issues but dont forget the asian airlines average height of a person will be quite different from the european / Australian average height. I am tall in Asian standards. And thats for a male, if you take into account females then its considerably lower.

As does the recliner? No?

Not really because he paid for that feature otherwise he could buy a cheaper budget airline ticket which has less recline or no recline in some aircraft. It would be like telling people not to eat on the plane because you dont like the smell of food or watching people eat food....They paid for the food so they have a right to use it as long as they dont have the food tray down during takeoff and landing aka safety precautions.

I think if people dont want recliners then they should fly the aircraft that have little or none. Obviously the ones that do offer it as an extra comfort feature for their passengers. I dont think its the passengers fault for using something for its intended purposes provided by the airline.

I'm off to Perth tomorrow, can you please point me to the airline that offers this service?

I've worked on a laptop with the seat in front of me reclined for an entire journey from LAX to NRT. It was on a SQ 77W, with 32" seat pitch. Once you get below 32", with recline it's nigh on impossible to do so (eg. the QF 738's). Which is the nub here. Everyone's saying it's a recline issue, it's really a seat pitch issue.

Personal preference: if people would just compromise and only half recline during meal. It's still more comfortable than the "prereclined" position (and let's face it, very few aircraft have upright seats to begin with, the ones on the likes of Ryanair are the closest to that), whilst those eating can do so without too much problem Or even better, some airlines have seats that half recline and the seat base goes forward, so similar effect, without resorting to the much maligned non reclining CX seats, where the seat base just went forward.
