News is 18 hours old now, but I couldn't find a thread, if duplicate, mods please merge.

In the first half of 2016, we’ll be bringing Android Pay to Australia — the simple and secure way to pay using your Android phone. Android Pay also stores your gift cards, loyalty cards and special offers right on your phone. - Google Blog

Google is partnering with some of Australia's largest financial institutions -- ANZ, Westpac, St George, Bank of Melbourne, Bank of South Australia, Bendigo Bank, Cuscal, ING Direct, and Macquarie Bank -- to bring Android Pay to cardholders in 2016.

With Android Pay, you simply unlock your phone, hold it to the terminal, and voila — your payment is done. We’re working closely with many of Australia’s major financial institutions — including ANZ, Westpac, Bank of Melbourne, Bank of South Australia, Bendigo Bank, Cuscal, ING DIRECT, Macquarie Bank, and St. George — with the aim of bringing Android Pay to their card holders in 2016, and will continue to work with more banks throughout the year.

When Android Pay arrives in Australia next year, it will support MasterCard and Visa credit and debit cards. We’re also working with eftpos to support their cards in Android Pay.

Aussies will be able to use Android Pay everywhere contactless payments are accepted. Many leading retailers are working with us to support the launch of Android Pay — including 7-Eleven, Brumby's Bakery, Coles Express, Coles Supermarkets, Crust Gourmet Pizza, Domino’s Pizza Enterprises Limited, Donut King, Gloria Jean’s Coffees, McDonald’s, Michel’s Patisserie, Pizza Capers, and Telstra.

It will be interesting to see how CBA goes, given they're a huge merchant processor but they have just invested in their own tap and pay solution for android.

At least I'm no longer rushing to get an iPhone or re-open an Amex or CBA CC.

The problem with the Android CBA tap and pay solution is you need to unlock your phone, enter the app, put a pin code etc etc. Much simpler to just whip the old card out the wallet.

What about Citi bank..... This seems like 9HD..... Finally..... It arrived... Left for 5 years and now back!
Mobile phone theft goes up?
But bring it on I say..... Just add bloody flybuys and Woolie's edr to it so I don't have to hand over cards to strangers that have just had their hand up one of their orifices!

I'm new to this Android pay.
Does Android pay work at self serve Australia post? Or even over the counter?

Can't comment specifically on those locations. However, Android pay will work wherever tap and pay will work for your card.

I'm not confident enough to no longer carry my cards. In particular, amex tends to not work on SWIFT terminals (Jaycar, some BP).

Ironically this afternoon I ducked out to the shops to get some cheese. Went to pay and realised that I had left my wallet at home. Android pay saved the day.
