ANA unveils Dreamliner Configs

"One women-only lavatory will be designated for use by women in all classes. Men will be restricted from using such toilets except in emergencies and when there are very few female passengers, ANA said."

If that is still the policy, then i don't see the issue - as long as the overall number of toilets isn't actually reduced

So we put in an additional toilet that could be replaced by a seat or two which would enable the carrier to make more money and provide cheaper fares or better service. I havent flown ANA and this is not going to incline me to fly them.

I say after 3 years they will just change the layout anyway.
I always think Airlines start off with grand plans for these type of things.

Yes agree, they all say pie in the sky stuff about providing space for this or that bar or lounge. When it comes time to walk the talk they'd rather put extra seats in which of course is the logical thing for an airline business.

Seriously? WTF?

Are these in addition to the men only and unisex bathrooms? What a complete waste of space and frankly offensive to men.

ANA introdcued them with the 777-300 on international routes.

V Australia also lists a 'ladies only' toilet as a feature in its business class.

I am sure they could have designed the interiors without female only loos... I believe some other airlines operate in this fashion...
Sure, but my point was that they cannot be removed once installed. The toilets are installed in an airliner before the fuselage is sealed as their build structure is greater than any of the doorways.

Regarding the female only toilet issue ... I am sure there are cultural factors at play here that make this concept work for ANA. I vaguely recall they are a Japanese airline ;) and likewise a big chunk of their passengers are from their home country as well. I am sure it would appeal to local (and for that matter foreign) women and is probably not something that's going to worry Japanese men too much, in a country where segregation of sexes is not exactly unheard of. Indeed the vast majority of foreign men who probably have no idea that the plane has such an arrangement until they board are hardly going to alter their travel plans on the basis of this.

That makes a lot of sense. Also, if most of the females use the 'women only', then that leaves the rest mostly for the men, meaning more toilets avilable for males (only)?

I'm just waiting for the announcement from EK that they're removing those showers from F on the A380.

Honestly, what is the deal about female only toilets? Last time I checked I was XY, but I fail to see how it is offensive.

Simon, do you find places like the Weld Club offensive? If not, what's the difference?

As for the point of removing the toilets and putting extra seats in, is it really that easy. If the plane was certified in the layout, would it not mean more delays before getting it out?

Going back to "removing the toilets" - my point was that these should be removed from the design and not from the aircraft that have been built.

In terms of the Weld Club - I think in a world where we bombarded with "it has to be equal for everyone" then things should be equal for everyone - I can't see the point of men only clubs in the same way that I can't see the point in women only gyms. The only subtle difference for me is that "x" only establishment clearly sets out that access is restricted - it is in situations like this where I pay the same fare as someone else but do not have access to the same level of service. I would say this is more akin to women only sections of the gym where men and women pay the same fee but have a private area thus reducing the available area for men but women still use the general area.

I think it's a "1st world" thing, don't recall much comment on things being equal for women in Arab countries and some other places.

Simply from a security viewpoint I support women only gyms....having teenage females  I've got enough grey hair as it is.

More like "first world problem"

I think this is a Japanese cultural thing, just like they have women only carriages on peak hour trains, though the whole catering-for-women thing is definitely starting to carve out a niche. Examples do include women only gyms, doctors who will only see women and women only rooms (with unique accessories) in select floors of some hotels. To take a page from my work environment, there are several scholarships and prizes available to students but these are typically targeted to "special" or minority groups. Examples of such groups include international students, Indigenous students, students from lower socio-economic background and......female students (particularly for studies in traditionally male dominated vocations, e.g. Engineering).

As someone mentioned, doesn't VA have a women's only toilet on board as well? I can't remember it being specifically marketed, nor can I recall if it is specially fitted out for the fairer sex, but I do recall a launch or promo photo with VA FAs posing inside such a toilet. I don't recall anyone making a big deal then (then again, it's not as if VA, like Apple, could possibly do anything wrong, right?)

I think the more difficult thing rather than just debating the right/wrong about having a women-only toilet is the enforcement of it. A women-only train carriage is rather easy to enforce, and I wouldn't expect many Japanese men to defy the "rules" in this case (as being part of the culture as well as Japanese - a primarily shaming and humbling society - being much more well behaved than a majority of the Western world), so my main worry is some male who has not seen these before, or just doesn't care, uses the women-only toilets. And as we know on an aircraft, there are always tough considerations to be made with respect to non-legal matters in:
  • How do you tell someone not to do something
  • What do you do if someone breaks the rules
  • How do you deal with someone who has a problem with the rules

Just like the reclining debate, addressing those concerns is never easy.

Since we have gone entirely off topic (and it wouldn't suprise me if a mod moved these comments into a new thread).
There is a big womens lib things happening in Arab countries right now. Just recently a whole group of women drove cars in Saudi Arabia despite the ban on them doing so - Saudi Arabia women test driving ban | World news | The Guardian

Yeah i am a +1 on the whole bull**** of women's only toilets on the plane... your in a sealed space with only so many lavs, not like a women's only gym which is cough enough but you can drive a few streets and find an equally accessible male gym.... one or more shouldn't be saved for just a select group unless maybe they want to pay more... if they have a problem with liquid on the floor maybe develop a system for a self clean or the hosties can do something, but i haven't ever seen it swimming in liquids or anything on any plane i've been on...

its the thin edge of the wedge, they start small with one or two examples, then more and more of this stuff starts happening, if we're all supposedly equal (and its not a smorgasbord where certain groups can cherry pick what suits them) then on a plane with several hundred people and only a set number of lavs, then let them be used by all... same as if a unaccompanied minor is on a plane doesn't a male have to move from the seat next to them, like we are all tarred with the brush of being a potential sex offender... again, the more cough we take the worse it can get...

won't go into women's only carriages ont he train in Egypt, but they can do what they like over there...

back on topic, yes the amount of Y seats looks small doesn't it... any word of Qantas will dow ith theirs???

So why not Japan? Why can Egypt do what they like, but not Japan?

For a bunch of supposed frequent travellers, all I can say open your eyes, a female only toilet on a Japanese airline is one of the most insignificant discrimination problems that I've heard of on a world scale.

The question is can a man in drag get away with using the female toilet? I say this in jest but when I was queuing at security in Manila the other day and someone who seemed to me obviously be a transgender or transvestite (M->F) was in the M queue and was evicted by security and moved across to the F queue (for those appalled by female only toilets on a plane, they have separate M & F security queues at Manila - and many other places - and guess which line is always longer ..)
