ANA J Class service HND-SYD

Holding a J ticket on ANA, HND to SYD in March. ANA publishes its menus, and I like to eat. Noticed that on the HND-SYD leg which departs at 22:10 or so, there is no dinner service, just an amuse and the usual heavy snacks on demand. Only full meal is breakfast before arrival. Is ANA cutting back? Must I eat in the ANA Lounge at HND? Grrrrr.

Looking at the menu, my assumption is that they expect most J pax to want to get onboard and sleep right away.

Not good at all. Airlines should offer proper dinner in J long haul even if it's late departure, not all pax go to sleep once they get onboard.

I've recently flown BA J 22:30 departure and standard dinner was offered. As far as I could see most pax chose to eat.

In some ways I think the length of the flight can have a bearing on that. I'm sure that there would be a number of pax who's intent is to get as much sleep as possible. And a full service is going to make that difficult as the lights would tend to be on longer and the crew moving around the cabin constantly. It's why BA do offer "Sleeper Services" after all.

That being said, my preference is for a full meal.

I find the idea of serving dinner after midnight absurd (who eats then?) But for a 22:10 departure I agree you should have the choice. SQ are notoriously stingy for meals on overnight flights (even in F) while TG serve 2 full meals on overnight flights.

Yes I find SQ to be super stingy in F on overnight flights, so always BTC just in case..!

For sure, for late long haul departures ANA keeps the lights dim even as one boards and they market a sleep friendly approach to service. And there is limited a la carte in the HND ANA Lounge. Even so, we'll be at FL36 before 23:00 and I'm a late eater in the European style, and, more importantly, for $6,000 one should be able to have a full meal if one wants. It's cheapness disguised as customer service.

Hmm that is disappointing. I've booked a few SYD-HND-SYD for next year. Catering looks average in both directions

I'd be asking for the rice crackers, ramen, maybe the sandwich if still hungry and then the ice cream

My best steak on any airline was JL J departing NRT at 22:30

The JL F lounge food was average so I agree with the OP, there should be a choice.
