So I am over the noisey 747 J class to Tokyo and trying ANAs 787 service. question is do I join there ANA program or one of the affilates and if so what offers the best value for further travel primarily around asia?

The main problem that I can see with the ANA Mileage Club program is that to earn status, at least half of the Premium Points need to be earned on ANA operated flights. So, if you're primarily planning to fly ANA then that may not be an issue. But I would perhaps look at crediting to another Star Alliance program - e.g. Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, or United Mileage Plus. If you're planning to travel a lot around Asia, I suspect SQ is a good option.

United has reasonable earn rates for business class flights taken in NH and good burn rated between Australia and Asia - worth considering. But need four sectors on UA to accrue status. LH miles and more have up to 200% earn rates also, but their burn rates not so good.

Otherwise if wanting both star alliance and VA useable status and ability to combine with local credit cards, SQ Krisflyer is worth considering, even though earn/burn not great. No SQ sectors required for status.

I would also consider Asiana as a viable Star Alliance program. I don't have firsthand experience on the redemption side of things but the qualification period is 24 months and Asiana offer lifetime star gold which is an attractive feature.

Yes agreed. If I ever pursue status with a Star Alliance airline it will definitely be Asiana.
