I think this type of stuff happens all the time and in most cases both parties are happy to do it anonymously.

Sadly someone has already tried to rort the system and use the same excuse which means the airlines naturally become a tad reticent to do favours without proof.

My husband flew from Sydney to Melbourne in January on a red deal with Qantas for his aunt's funeral. It was an overnight trip. The morning he was returning, another aunt died in Victoria. I phoned Qantas and they were lovely, no problems getting a credit for the return leg as we were unsure when about the date of the second funeral. I asked if they would like some documentation. The CSO laughed and said No, no one would make up a story that two aunts died.
