I have seen a few posts previously about the gaps in Amex's insurance cover, but can't seem to find the specific posts on this.

Can anyone please enlighten me? What can you get from another insurer (e.g. Columbus) that you can't get from the insurance included in the Platinum card?

i think there was something about terrorism not included. anything else? are there higher excesses, etc?

The last time I looked, the Amex insurance doesn't include car hire.

I was able to access this info on the limitations of Amex Plat. Insurance....hope it helps

There are two different types of Amex Plat cards (credit card vs charge card) and each has different insurance policies, limitations and requirements.

PDS for Platinum Credit Card: http://www.americanexpress.com/australia/pdfs/platcredit_insuranceflightbooklet.pdf
PDS for Platinum Charge Card: http://www.iplatinum.americanexpress.com/platinum/australia/downloads/PlatinumWelcomePack.pdf
(note that due to the way the Amex website is set up, I can't guarantee that these are the latest revisions of the PDS's, and you should call Amex for confirmation)

Note that it seems that if you have a Plat Charge card, and have a Plat Credit Card connected to your account, some purchases made on the Plat Credit card get the insurance benefits of the Charge card. There are differences - for example, with the Credit Card, your entire journey must be paid on the Amex, but with the Charge card, only $100 or more of your flight needs to be charged to the card, and the Plat Charge card has payment if you are Hijacked etc (once again, this is only my reading, and should be checked if you want to rely on it!)

You are indeed correct. The Platinum Charge and Creidt cards have different policies.

Whilst the Platinum Charge Card has come in for some criticism on this forum, the travel insurance is actually very good and goes a long way to off-set the $900 annual fee.

thanks all for your comments.

very helpful... as always

as i only have the Plat CC, I am therefore thinking i would probably be better off purchasing my own insurance, given that there are so many gaps. yes?
