Amex Platinum Edge vs Gold Charge

AMEX website is honestly hopeless in telling people what the cards come with and what they do. Take for example the Platinum card, theirs a ton of features such as gold, Marco Polo, spa, platinum travel etc that are not mentioned on their site.

The gold charge comes with an edge companion card 100%. Call AMEX if your not convinced.

Colour me interested, again.

I may try giving them a call later in the day and see what they say, though being a call centre I don't expect much confirmation.

Is there an email address I can email?

Ok, just got off the phone with a nice lady from the USA.

She did confirm for me that there is indeed an offer of a companion platinum edge to gold charge holders :D Which they extend the application to you after you receive the gold charge (not something that comes automatically)

However the catch is you must be enrolled with MR on the gold charge to be eligible (total net annual fee of $210), which thwarted my hopes of signing up for the charge sans MR for $130, pocketing the 30k MR points and getting a 'cheap' platinum edge. The other catch is of course having to have the gold charge (at the extra $15 cost), whose usefulness is debatable when the platinum edge is on hand. Plus it may be a bit of rigamarole to ditch the gold charge later on and 'downgrade' back to purely a platinum edge, depending on how the accounts are linked.

I asked if there was any sort of documentation to confirm that the platinum edge comes with the gold charge, either online or in literature they can send to me, the answer is unfortunately no. It's an internal offer extended only to gold charge holders and it's not documented on anything available to the public  So basically I have to take their word for it.

It'll be at least another month or two before I sign up to any new cards anyhow, so this may be of use to some of you. Hopefully the deal doesn't get 'ozbargained' before I get to it

So in summary:

Yes, the platinum edge is available to gold charge holders, but only if you sign up for MR on the gold ($210)
No, there's nothing written anywhere to confirm it so there's still some risk of failure (if the person you talk to has NFI) and in theory they could withdraw the offer at the drop of a hat anyway.
Through some rigmarole it's a extra 15k points for $15 if you were already after the plat edge.

@ newformula,
Love your site, it's taught me plenty.

I also got the Plat Edge benefit confirmed by Amex in writing - post written, you can read their reply. Bizarre that it's not advertised.

I'd encourage anyone else (especially those who knew this already) to leave their own referral link for a Gold Charge in the comments of that post - they will get used, you might find the odd 10k MR points float your way.

How often do your referrals get used newformula? Feel free not to answer if it's confidential... Just curious.

Enough to keep me not thinking about my MR balance... and to have warehoused a stash in various programs in case of any detrimental changes to MR too. I'm lucky (but also have worked hard on the site for 3 years, so not just luck).

Thanks for the write up.
With both the gold charge and plat edge tow, is there actually any reason to use the gold charge?

No idea, but i'd be pushing another 10k towards his way when I get around to signing up as thanks for the helpful information on the website :)

Only for large purchases that would earn 1:1 on either card, that you'll know you'll pay off at the end of the month - Gold Charge has uncapped points earn.

And for that, thanks! Again, I have enough points (OK, when's enough, I know) so would encourage others to share their referral links.

Been meaning to do this for a while - does anyone want to refer me to the Qantas Discovery card? Possibly 5k points for your trouble - deep link to do this (may need to be logged into your Amex account) is https://www.americanexpress.com/aus...html?mgmerCard=qantasDiscovery&CPID=999996001.
I say may get the points as I'm a current Amex cardholder and therefore might not be eligible for bonus points, but I want to test this as some people have let me know this may not be the case. And I want the Discovery card too, not that I'll use it much but the double Qantas points on QF spend will be useful.
You can PM me the referral link... or PM me and I'll give you my email.

After not hearing anything back from them, I gave them a call and was advised I have been declined.

What is the best way to request a reassessment? I supplied my last two ATO notices but advised they will be low as I had 10 months off due to a holiday.

I also uploaded a letter from my accountant stating 85K pa working at my families business plus 900 pw doing my own sole trading since April last year.

Any advise or any connections with the best department/person to speak to?

How did your experiment go, or is it still in process?
