....
that the travel and accommodation is now under the 3 points per dollar category. It is still under the 2 points category on the Amex website. .....

Yeah good pickup. Can someone verify whether this is exclusive to the referral link?

Very interesting, my purchases last week only earned 2 pts per $, but then again I would be an existing card holder if this did only apply to new referral applicants, and thus not eligible.

Raise a query and send a message via your Amex log-in. Customer service has been very attentive for previous queries of mine; I've also read other forums where there were mix-ups with restaurant/hotel points (different points-earn tiers) and Amex happily credited members with points owed. Worth a shot I'd say.

BTW I'm hoping to apply for this card this Sunday!

That is a good idea, I think I'll do that.

Good luck with your application!

I too am jumping in with a quick plug for my Platinum Charge referral link: http://amex.com.au/refer/adeleeF6LP
I've recently completed a oneworld classic 280k points booking and know how to get the best points value from the main FF schemes, so always happy to help if anyone needs ideas on how to spend the 120k bonus point windfall that comes with this card :)

Adelee I might need your guidance booking a oneworld classic economy class for next year. So lookout for my PM.

My wife and I just signed up a month ago with one of the referrals here, and I have to say this card has already paid it self off.

There are so many AMEX cash back offers that pop up, we didn't even have to try to get them.

First was the Mid-Year offer, where you spend $100 at selected stores and you get $30 back, up to 3 times at different merchants.

I was already in the market to upgrade my computer so I got $30 from Umart.
Then got 2 pairs of shoes from Hush Puppies at a staggering 80% off because they were already having a 60% off sale on all their stock.

Then there's the Woolworth $15 cash back on $30 spend. No brainer.

Then $20 off $40 spend at David Jones. Easy money since David Jones is already having a 50% off sale.

Then $100 cash back on 3 transactions from HCF. All I had to do was pay for my fortnight membership fees in 3 separate transactions, and BAM! $100.

Then $25 off $50 spend at my local Harris Farms.

Then $10 off $20 spend at Event Cinemas. Combine this with Telstra Thanks tickets at $12.5 each, that's 2 tickets for $15.

Then there's the Kikki K $5 off $10, and they're currently having a EOFY sale where most things are 40-50% off. Plus you get $10 off voucher when you sign up as a member. Got a nice tea jug, and stocked up on birthday cards for $5.

Then there's the $10 off $40 spend at BP. Spent that $40 on topping up my Opal Card. BAM! $10 off ****tyRail.

My father in law's birthday was coming up, so spent $120 on wines he loved, and got $50 back.

Then there's the $15 back on $15 spend from Samsung Pay. Yes! Free Money!!

And to top all of this off, we applied for the free Reserve card, and got all these deals applied that as well, so we got to double dip in these amazing cashback offers.

This was all just in the FIRST MONTH of membership! Saved $375 on what I would have spent money on anyway. Then double it because my wife also has the card.

Plus we're going to use our points for a business class return trip to Japan ($4150), and use the free return flight to NZ ($400) with $300 travel credit towards our hotel, and using the remainder of our points for a single business class flight to Hong Kong ($2700).

Then there's the Priority Pass lounge access, which I've calculated on the 3 trips we're taking in the next year, will be around a minimum of 10 visits. At $27 visit each, that's $270.

We're already looking at a value of $8500.

Unfortunately my wife forgot to use the referral links here and was only given 100,000 points. This means she is exactly 20,000 points short of a single business class flight to Hong Kong, and if she doesn't get it, I'll probably have to give up my points so she sits in business and I sit in economy :(

So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE (PRETTY PLEASE), if you're going to sign up, use my wife's referral so I don't have to suffer for her mistake!

Looks like there's a new benefit, it's kind of buried in the back of the latest copy of Departure - there's now Plaza Premium lounge access for the card holder and one guest. Could be a workaround when you've given out your other Priority Pass and another supplementary cardholder would like lounge access.

Here's my referral link for anyone's still have yet to sign up a card:

I would be interested in this, but I don't get a copy of Departures Magazine, could someone take a picture/scan and put it on here? Would be keen to double check the terms and conditions - especially whether this applies to the platinum business charge card too.

AMEX is still offering the 120,000 sign-on bonus points on the AMEX Platinum Charge Card. The current offer now expires on the 15 August 2016.

If you are thinking about applying for this card I'd certainly recommend jumping in now - the 120k bonus points is a massive bonus and who knows if it will be extended beyond the offers current expiry date.

Whilst the 120k bonus points sounds fantastic, there is a catch and it's relatively large - the card comes with a $1200 annual fee. Now I'm normally not much into paying annual fees for credit cards (with the AMEX Edge and this card excluded), so how did I justify such a large fee - well here's how:

  • 120,000 Membership Rewards points – pretty simple really – based on my numbers I value this at $3000-$4000 (annual fee covered right there!) – a little more on this later.
  • Points can be transferred to massive variety of partners – Qantas FF, Virgin Velocity, Kris Flyer and Cathy Pacific Asia Miles and some more valuable ones via SPG (AAdvantage, BA Executive Club & Alaska Miles etc) – no other (non-invite only) Australian Credit Card can boast this!
  • $300 Annual Travel Credit with American Express Travel – value $300 (clearly)
  • A Free domestic / international flight (NZ) each year if you apply for a FREE Platinum Reserve companion card – you’ll need to ring AMEX after approval to arrange an application for this (value to me $500+) – Destinations List Here (Platinum Reserve)
  • Unlimited Virgin Australia / Priority Pass / AMEX & Delta Lounge Access – a bit more subjective but, I value it at around $250 – I’m not big on paying for lounge access so it is hard for me to value, but the Virgin Australia domestic lounge access kind of speaks for itself (they are really good these days!) and once outside Australia Priority Pass have a lounge network that is hard to surpass! If you value lounge access more than me this benefit could easily be worth $500+++
  • Access to AMEX Cash Backs and Small Shop Offers – I wasn’t even aware of this benefits until I received this card -total value for the year estimated to be around $500+. The AMEX offers have really ramped up in the last few months! Recent offers can be found in this thread.
  • NRMA style roadside assistancevalue about $80 (hopefully you or I never need this one!!)
A Quick Card Summary:

  • 120,000 Membership Rewards bonus points after spending $1000 in first two months after card activation
  • A $300 Platinum Travel Credit each year, can be redeemed online for airfares, car hire and hotel bookings – I’ve done it and it was really simple
  • Complimentary access to more than 800 airport lounges in 100 countries, including Virgin Australia Lounges, Priority Pass, Delta Skymiles and American Express Lounges
  • Dedicated Platinum Concierge Service to take care of travel plans, tickets or dinner reservations
  • Earn up to 3 Membership Reward points per dollar – I should mention I value MR points at 2.5-.3.5c/point
  • Transfer your points to a choice of 10 airline rewards programs:
    • Qantas Frequent Flyer, Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Air New Zealand Airpoints, THAI Royal Orchid Plus, Malaysia Airlines Enrich and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
    • And the best bit, transfers to AAdvantage, BA Executive Club & Alaska Miles, amongst others are possible through SPG (Starwood Preferred Guest)
  • Transfer your points to leading hotel programs: Hilton HHonors, Priority Club Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest
  • Complimentary enrolment into elite tier of hotel partner programs including Club Carlson, Starwood Preferred, Hilton Honors.
  • Complimentary worldwide Travel Insurance and Purchase Protection Insurance
  • Great savings on First and Business Class fares with some of the worlds leading airlines through the AMEX Platinum Airline Privileges program
So as you see you can really get some value out of this card, especially with the current sign-on bonus. How to value the current AMEX offer, always a challenging task, but I will give it a go. Whilst putting a value on reward points is always very subjective, I personally value AMEX membership reward points at 2.5-3.5c/point. Based on this, the bonus points from the current offer are worth $3000-$4000. Perhaps a less subjective way is to provide some basic concrete examples, the 120k points redeemed for Virgin Australia economy SYD-MEL flights is worth $2500 – not a bad deal, but this is probably a really poor use of these points. Better value would be flying Business return SYD-LAX on Qantas by redeeming the points through Cathy Pacific Asia Miles – Qantas charge $7000+ for this flight!!! Of course for supreme value you could try your luck at a Singapore Airlines Suite – using AMEX points is the only way I’m ever seeing the inside of one of those!!! :)

If you add in all the other benefits in too, the total value of this offer to me is in the order of $4600-$5600!! Not a bad deal at all in my mind!!

As I started off with, if you’d like to apply for the Platinum Charge Card I'd really recommend you get on it quickly, before the current sign-on bonus expires. Any referral link from this forum, or elsewhere, should do the trick, but make sure the AMEX page that loads explicitly says 120,000 points (not the 100,000 point offer available to the general public). I always recommend printing a PDF copy of the page before beginning the process in case there are any problems later - that way you always have a record! If you'd like to use my Referral link is HERE, my sincere thanks and good luck to anyone applying! I'm happy to take questions via PM too on this card (or anything else), no obligations whatsoever.

Footnote:
Here, here and here are three articles I've found helpful, the first two are on the predicted impacts of the recent RBA interchange reforms and the last is the list of card providers that have already reduced there points earn in 2016! All three make interesting reading and if you need convincing as to why you should get a AMEX issued AMEX card, you probably won't after reading these! As you can see these reforms are already having a big impact on the card market place!

Referral HERE

PS - Whilst applying for new credit cards offers great value (and can even be addictive), please only apply for a card you can afford! No sign-on bonus, no matter how big, is worth a lifetime of debt.
PPS - AMEX is offering big bonuses for people referring others for cards during July, it's 60000 points for the plat charge (this card) and 30000 pts for the Edge. Presumably from 1-Aug these will return to lower, more normal levels.

Hi friendly AFFers,

Adding my referral link to the mix. This is such a great card and with 10+ airline transfer partners you have safety with accruing Membership Rewards points.

Additionally, I have a quite robust spreadsheet that is useful to analyse the options you have for award travel using various FF programs' miles/points or buying miles, including all the Membership Rewards transfer partners' award charts where available. PM if you are interested and I can provide a copy.

http://amex.com.au/refer/declajfTMt << referral link. Would super appreciate if anyone were kind enough to select my link.

Does anyone know if the referrer still get the sign up bonus even if person applying for the card didnt get the sign up bonus due to the existing card holder rule?

I believe so. Due to the fact that the referral bonus usually comes through before the referee' reaching their minimum spend.

Based on others' experience, as long as you haven't previously held this particular product before then you should be able to get the 120k points. Worst case scenario is get the card, if the points doesn't show up then ask for a pro rata refund on the fee if they billed you for the fee otherwise it's a full refund.

If you haven't already signed up, it would be most appreciated if you could use my referral link:
