amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 or 3:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 4:1 to Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders can also earn bonus Amex Membership Rewards Points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Hi friends, I have 1,000,000 MR points, looking for advice which airline partners to transfer to for some future travel plans for partner and I.

We currently live in Melbourne. Travelling to Manila or Cebu return in September 09 - 16. Travelling to Singapore in November 11 or 12 November, return on 30th. Travelling from Singapore on February 10 and returning back to Singapore on 06 or 07th March.

I ideally like to book these flights in J/F , with the airlines that offer the best value. I appreciate all the assistance :)

Hi @benjy

The answer to these types of questions is almost always the same. Check frequent flyer reward availability for the destinations you want, on the dates you want. Be prepared to be flexible.

Once you know that availability is there, then, and only then, transfer your MR points to the relevant FF programme.

You're trying to avoid a situation where you prematurely transfer your points into one FF program, only to find that the availability is via another.

Depending on the FF program, you might also find that your points don't quite get you as far as you'd hoped. With AmEx at the moment, transferring to Qantas and Velocity will mean you'll end up with more points, so check availability first with them. But again, more points will be useless if the availability is elsewhere.

Singapore Airlines is your best bet for availability, but 1 million MR = 333k Singapore Airlines miles, which may cover ONE return J trip for 2 people, but definitely not two. Premium Economy is slightly cheaper. Visit their website to check reward availability and pricing.
