amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders can also earn 200,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards Points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Newbie to the FF world here. Am keen to apply for the Amex Platinum. I've seen offers of 275k signup bonus points. Does anyone know if that happens regularly? Just deciding if I should apply now with the 200k bonus or wait. Thanks.
I would also suggest clearing browsing data and refreshing the page - that has worked before for increasing the bonus as high as 275k or more. For me at the moment I do that and it goes from 200 up to 225k.
All the best!

Tried today and said likely cancel the card without an upgrade offer or anything. They didn’t even try to keep me! Oh well!

anyone ever unenrolled from a benefit to have a different membership number registered and then reenrolled with the new membership number?

Hi I have just got a Platinum card, and my Accor plus is coming up for renewal get the bonus 20 status points for the auto renewal, is there any way to get the 20 status points with the Platinum card benifit?

Thanks
Clive

Question on the local dining benefit. This one is one redemption per calendar year up-to $200. I used it in November last year, my AMEX year is August-July. I can't see the offer saved to my card (where I can see the global dining benefit). Do I have to wait for my card to renew before I can get the benefit this calendar year? Also, can it stack with the 50/200 offer from Otto, which is a dining partner?

the benefit is per calendar year, so if you last used it in November you can use it again anytime from Jan

Hi all!

This is perhaps a niche question.

I have the Platinum Card and my Accor Plus membership renews each year at the end of August. I never thought much of it other than making a note to use the free night by the end of August each year.

I hadn't paid much attention to Accor's status but since I've qualified and maintained its Gold status for the last couple of years without too much effoty, I was having a look at perhaps making the push for Platinum.

This is when my Accor Plus membership year renews comes in to play. My membership renews at the end of August, and the 20 nights are credited at the same time. But come the new year the 20 nights are wiped from my account as Accor resets all status points and nights.

This means that out of the 12 months in a year, I'll only have the 20 nights on my account for 4 (from September to December), which is not very useful or fair.

I contacted Accor, who told me to contact Accor Plus. When I contacted Accor Plus, they essentially said 'it is what it is', and mentioned two other things:

1. I can ask Amex about the possibility of deferring the renewal until 1 January; and
2. If I renew as when the renewal falls due in August, I'll get the usual 20 nights + a bonus 10 nights.

The 10 bonus night is good, but I'd rather having the 20 nights in my account all year. Does anyone have any similar experience? I thought I'll consult the braintrust before I contact Amex.
Hi Yangry, so with the Amex Platinum, you still get the bonus status points as you do with auto renewal?

Clive

If you already have the Accor Plus benefit set up you don't need to do anything at all. The renewal will process automatically and you'll get the 20 nights.

So I just have my Platinum Card in my Accor account, and I get the complementary membership?
Clive

No, you need to log into the Amex website, browse to your card benefits, and follow the prompts to enrol in the Accor Plus benefit.

You may wish to contact Amex if you need further assistance - they have a 24/7 support team.
