amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders can also earn 200,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards Points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

The sign-up bonus on this card is currently 200,000 Amex Membership Rewards Points. Until 27 May 2025, new cardholders can apply through AFF to get an additional 20,000 bonus points on top of that.

Note you can get 275,000 points for signing up very easily - usually via referral which are available on this forum.

It's a shame they are so inconsistent with their offers, would be nice to choose who to support with signup, but not at the expense of the best deal!

Hi all!

This is perhaps a niche question.

I have the Platinum Card and my Accor Plus membership renews each year at the end of August. I never thought much of it other than making a note to use the free night by the end of August each year.

I hadn't paid much attention to Accor's status but since I've qualified and maintained its Gold status for the last couple of years without too much effoty, I was having a look at perhaps making the push for Platinum.

This is when my Accor Plus membership year renews comes in to play. My membership renews at the end of August, and the 20 nights are credited at the same time. But come the new year the 20 nights are wiped from my account as Accor resets all status points and nights.

This means that out of the 12 months in a year, I'll only have the 20 nights on my account for 4 (from September to December), which is not very useful or fair.

I contacted Accor, who told me to contact Accor Plus. When I contacted Accor Plus, they essentially said 'it is what it is', and mentioned two other things:

1. I can ask Amex about the possibility of deferring the renewal until 1 January; and
2. If I renew as when the renewal falls due in August, I'll get the usual 20 nights + a bonus 10 nights.

The 10 bonus night is good, but I'd rather having the 20 nights in my account all year. Does anyone have any similar experience? I thought I'll consult the braintrust before I contact Amex.

Are you planning to hit the other 40 nights before September? If not, it makes no difference.

I already have 20 nights so far in the year, with two more stays to come.

If I had those additional 20 nights in my account, and if I pick up the Accor Plus 2.0 Premium Card, that will give me Platinum, which means lounge access for my upcoming stays in Bali and Fiji.

How do you get the 2.0 card and are those prices right? Annual Fee: ¥2,688 = $28.93 AUD

I haven't gotten it myself. I've been reading this thread. The last message in the thread says that there's currently a promotion and the price is now ¥2,188 (which is about $470).

My understanding is that outside of China/Hong Kong/Macau there's no benefit other than the 30 nights credited. But there are two free nights and a bunch of discounts to be used within the greater China area.
