Amex Plat Edge flight 'Not Valid For Earn'

Thanks. Not sure if I should do this as I have a feeling the flexi fare is a lot higher than the saver which I need to top up...

Ring Amex and find out what it will cost you. I found the Amex travel people to be really good.

On a similar note, the full revenue J tickets are always going to cost a heap more than these Saver->Flexi->upgrade to J so I reckon its just about impossible for me to lose unless my credit shell was less than the cost of the Amex card that provided the free flight (and even thats not completely true as there is value elsewhere in the card as well).

Give them a ring, even if the flexi is 800$ and you only receive 300 as a credit, thats more than 30% off and with half price points upgrades right now its a _very_ nice J upgrade deal...

I also was told on the phone that the free edge flight would earn SC's. However, that was 18 months ago and it has all changed.

If wanting to cancel and rebook the same flight I would be up front and say you want to cancel and rebook so you have a flexi that you can use your points to upgrade. There is no reason why they shouldn't be supportive of that or why you would need to cover up what your doing. However, if booking a flight to cancel, in order to retain a credit, good if your free flight needs to be used as the credit shell gives you an extra year, I would find the most expensive route to book.

Whilst the flights aren't eligible for points earn, Amex have confirmed to me previously that they should earn SCs, but I can't remember if that was for QF or DJ. When with QF though, I always earned both points and SCs.
I have read though the Amex T&Cs and while it explicitly says "frequent flyer points" will not be earned, status credits are not mentioned.

Therefore, with the absence of an explicit mention, the status quo should apply should it not? (i.e. earn status credits)

Mmm, I've read it that way too, however, I have come to doubt that 3rd parties like Amex go into this sort of detail and instead rely upon a generic use of the term "frequent Flyer points" ... meaning all FF _rewards_ (therefore including SC). Even some of DJ's own T&C are written in a way that makes me feel that FF covers everything, rewards wise.

Watching this thread with interest as I've got a flight to book before November, and it would be nice to book a flexi!

Have a look here: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....x-free-flight-upgrade-34297-3.html#post612538

Its pretty current and should get you to where you want to be if you have a bit of patience on the phone and ask the various CSR's to help you do it - there's nothing sneaky going on here, its all above board - the CSR's will help you if you are honest with them (at least, this was my experience).

I just booked my free flight and I was told that it would earn Status Credits but would not earn points... has there been another change? o_0

Well I flew SYD-CBR-SYD using my EDGE Free flight and definitely no status credits or miles. I completed the trip 2 weeks ago.

I was told when booking my free flight 2 weeks ago it would not earn points, however no mention of SC's. Result for MEL-BNE-MEL. The extra SC's would have helped me not do a status run...

Hmnn interesting, I made a point of it too, saying it was really interesting. Maybe you guys should call up looking for your SCs and tell them the callcenter are telling people they will get them! :D

I reckon these free flights are much better value being converted to Flexi for a few bob and then upgraded to J using points. You get SC's and FF points in this case (at Flexi rates).

Agreed. Unfortunately my booking was made for my partner and her schedule wasn't as flexible as I'd hoped for.
