One half of my free return flight with the Amex Plat Edge CC shows in Velocity as:

Processed DateActivity DateDescriptionStatus CreditsVelocity Points
BaseBonusTotal
15 Aug 1210 Aug 12Melbourne-Adelaide (Not Valid For Earn)0000

Has anyone else experienced this? I thought they at least earned status credits..

I'm sure people have used them for status runs in the past. Has this changed?

My flight last year didn't earn. Don't expect to earn this year. Pretty sure that's what the T&Cs say as well.

With my Reserve card, it has never earnt SC (or points) when flying with Virgin - This has been the last 3 or 4 years. Before that, when Qantas was the flight supplier, the flights were not supposed to earn points or SC, but generally earnt both.

This is in the T&Cs somewhere.

Clearly I've misread the T&Cs or just totally made it up in my head! ;)

I think some people were getting points/SC by cancelling the booking, getting a credit voucher and then rebooking a flex fare with the credit voucher. But last I read here, this loophole was closed.

As Medheads post - the way to get SC's and FF is to cancel the saver booking and rebook flexi at the cost difference + cancel / booking fee then upgrade to J using points. so far I know this possibility is still open, but when you cancel the saver your credit shell will now be held by Amex and not by DJ. This may mean there will be routing or other restrictions ... its a bit unknown right now. I'll be trying the theory in the next several weeks with my last free flight for the year.

Thanks, I booked my free flight last week. I might give it a shot as well. D'ya reckon they'll let me rebook the same flights?

When I tried this in May for an early June flight I cancelled my saver, rebooked as flexi and upgraded to J on the same flight. Mind that when I did this the credit shell was held by virgin not by amex as it is now ... but I haven't read any reports from anyone trying this method since around the time they changed the deal and made the credit stay with amex.

However, I can't see it wouldn't work and intend to try again with another one of these free tickets shortly. I think there are several here who are interested in the detail of how well or badly it goes, so all data gathered will be useful I think.

Before I cancelled the last one, just moments before I went ahead, I did ask what the credit would be worth and I was told. So, I had the chance to weigh up if the changeover cost was going to be worth it.

Whilst the flights aren't eligible for points earn, Amex have confirmed to me previously that they should earn SCs, but I can't remember if that was for QF or DJ. When with QF though, I always earned both points and SCs.

My experience, as recently as last month is no points, nor any SC earn with the DJ AMEX "free" flights.

Once you get "(not valid for earn)", that's generally it.

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

Made a booking this week using my free return flight with Amex. Cancelled the next day.

Had $306 credit shell (after the $80 fee) and used it directly with Virgin to book new flights with different dates, times and destinations.

Considering the annual fee was $350 this makes it a pretty sweet deal.

Is the credit with AMEX or Virgin?

Also what route are you flying and I suppose you rebooked into a flex fare ?

Is your CC is reserve amex plat?

What card? The fee for an edge is $149 not $350. There are probably different rules for the edge's flights.

I thought it was just a wider range of routes/destinations for the Reserve. Otherwise the same.

However, I'm the one that started this thread having well and truly barked up the wrong tree, so, pinch of salt and all that ;)

Did you have to top up with cash to rebook the flexi as it may be over $300?

And when you cancelled the amex booking did you rebook a flexi right away with virgin or you waited until the next day?

This thread from May might be of interest:

There is rumour that the process may have changed a little and that amex holds the credit shell now ... however, Pat25d above indicates much more recent activity that appears to work in the same way it worked for me back in May. Of course the standard disclaimer ... YMMV.
