AMEX not accepted or surcharge

I have to say, AMEX acceptance seems way lower up here in Brisbane than in Melbourne. When we lived in Melbourne, about 80% of places we frequent took AMEX. Up here it's more like 50/50 and I find myself using VISA a lot more.

Yes its funny that. Until last qtr last year I found acceptance in Perth to be fairly good. Melbourne was even better - but Sydney was far and away worse.

Well with AMEX issues... I have been here in UK since May 6 leaving in May 22 and 60% of my time have been using my AMEX compared to 95% in Australia. Places that have been ok included Tesco and Orange but even in London had loads of problems. Its always good to have a Visa or MC as well as AMEX but a person would be completely fried if AMEX was their only card !!!

Then don't go to The Netherlands where acceptance is extraordinarily low. Mastercard is the card of choice of locals.

That's if you're lucky. On a recent trip I could hardly even use my Mastercard as most places only accepted Dutch bank issued cards.

I do not doubt that at all. Have had trouble using any card on a number of visits. I thought it was just me. I take cash now.

For such an advanced country you really have to wonder what they're thinking!
Their lives are paid for with chipkart. Want to catch a train using the ticketing machine on the platform? No problem. Select destination, now payment, now insert coins. Sorry you cannot purchase a ticket, only top-up your chipkart with which you can purchase the ticket.

Had the same experience with peek and cloppenburg in Germany. Would not accept MC, so had to pay cash.

I'm trying to pay any bills I can with PostBillPay using Paypal (with Amex registered). 1:1 earn rate on Plat Edge.

You can have Amex hooked up to Paypal payments?

I have had Visa done for ages but did not know one could use Amex.

Yes you can. Go and register your amex now!

Great tip .. now working like a charm for me.

Ebay had double Virgin points last week and then I paid it all with paypal, so got 3 Virgin points for many $1000s of purchases. :)

Bought a car on the w/e with an Amex charge. Dealer wasn't impressed at all and said this would be the last time they accept Amex for such a transaction. Had to pay 1.5%, which was pretty hard bargained for I might add. They reckon they pay 2.25%, I laughed and told them they are getting ripped off, talk to Amex ... but they are not interested.

Discovered that my dentist accepts Amex without surcharge. Now that will sweeten the bills.

If I by a laptop for $1500 as I am about to do, and pay by amex via PayPal will I still get the extended 1 year extra Warranty that paying a store direct with Amex always gives me??

Don't forget you can claim the gst back under TRS if departing the country up to 60 days after purchase.

Had forgotten all about that and fly to Madagascar and Reunion mid August.

I think it is 30 days not 60, but I will hold off a week or two!
