NQR Sunshine, 2 amex cards not accepted. Previously got Shop Small credits there.

Cut my Amex up 5 years ago when acceptance was much less than universal and surcharges were higher than Visa or MC

I think there is a time and place for Amex and have one handy for those occasions- the statement credits have a lot to do with it for me.

I don't think you need to be so drastic. There's still lots of places that take Amex surcharge-free.

I've simplified my life to two go-to credit cards.

My monthly ANZ Black account spend is about $8000 all of which is surcharge-free expenditure on the AMEX card.
If someone says there's a surcharge on Amex, I switch to my JQ Platinum MC and am happy with the 1:1 QF points.
I don't even carry the ANZ Black Visa card with me any more since I've received the JQ MC.

In the last two weeks two KFCs in my area (Darwin) have suddenly stopped taking Amex :(

I dont understand how Jeanswest can have an Amex offer but not take Amex. Or at least, my local doesnt...I tried and the machine reject it.

Sad to see that Costco Australia will not be accepting Amex as of May 1 this year.

I see them loosing as this move will stop businesses who typically use AMEX.

I like Amex Member Rewards Ascent points rather than other cc reward points due to a better range of transfer partners (1$ spend:1 point with many airlines and the option of SPG $2:1point. And ability to transfer to Qantas if enrolled in Ascent Premium). Even thought Citibank Prestige now has a $1 spend:1 point transfer ratio for most of its airline programs), I like Amex for what I percieve is greater flexibility with the Ascent/Ascent Premium Program.

I was looking for a place to eat in the small fishing village of Suk Kwu Wan on Lamma Island in Hong Kong and many restaurants were advertising that they accepted AMEX (no surcharge)...I wish it was always that easy in Melbourne...:p

CBD kebabs flinders st melbourne. $6 kebabs. Amex accepted and advertised all over the front door including shop small stickers

Do they still do $6 Kebabs? I think they are under the Shop Small list but under the traders name.

Walked past here on Tuesday night and they were advertising it. Have never been game to buy from there - am I missing out?

I've noticed recently that a whole bunch of Asian restaurants who suddenly started accepting Amex, generally without surcharge, about 6 months ago in PER, now have universally got signs on their countertops looking for 2%. Interestingly, a lot, though not all, of them are also showing 2% for MC/Visa ... so something has caused them to re-evaluate their whole card acceptance idea.

Maybe they have got a blended rate for all cards or they copped on to how much they get charged for premium VISA/MC cards, such as VISA Infinite or MC World.
