On a work trip , the property refused to accept Amex and the total charge for the accommodation is more than my current personal card. Is there any other possible way to make payment while sorting out with the travel department within my company.

I am assuming some of you might have come across this precarious situation , hence looking for some alternate payment options.

Thanks for your time.

Never heard of a big chain hotel not accepting Amex
Which property ?

JW Marriott Auckland

Ridiculous for a hotel under that flag to not accept Amex - I would be asking to speak to the duty/general manager. Their website has no mention of it - just says "Accepts: Credit Cards".

The property seems like it's just opened, Amex may not be huge in NZ, but this will undoubtedly be an issue with international travellers holding Marriott co-branded Amex cards...

For now , was allowed to check-in without any payment card while the manager is sorting out how to deal with the payment. Total charge is over 6900 NZD and the limit on my other card is only 6000 AUD ; before travel I was confident the charge card would cover all the expenses hence this stressful situation.

Do you have a Bonvoy account? If not, perhaps create one.
You can set up a "Click to Pay" account for "online checkout" for Bonvoy members. Click to Pay accepts Amex.

Add your current booking to "My Trips" and see if you can just checkout online. Might work. No guarantee.

I looked at this option however it was letting me pay for new reservations , not sure if it would let me pay for an existing reservation after check-in.

How does the online price for a new booking compare with your existing res? If prices are down due to the recent weather events, see if you can put through a brand new booking via Marriott.com?

Otherwise, assume you don't have spare cash to pay into your personal card, or can't arrange something to that effect to increase the amount you can put on the card?

The booking is made by the company appointed travel team , hence I am not worried about total cost ; it's more about having to deal with the stress of co-ordinating with different people when it was just a tap and go scenario.

On a different note , the property is fully booked till 24th Feb ( my check-out date).

The alternate option I have is to split the payment into two , pay with a credit card and the remaining on debit card. Will talk to the front desk guys in the evening.

Again , appreciate all the suggestions and inputs. I just hope the visa pay thingy works fine so I don't have to worry any more.

It's unusual for your corporate travel agent to be unable to pay this directly..?

Does your company have any corporate Visa/MC cards that could be processed over the phone?

Surely that’s an oversight of the new hotel, not setting up properly yet. Seeing as many of the Titaniums in Marriott are there because of the AMEX credit card I’m sure the hotel will want to fix that up ASAP.

Yes definitely speak to the GM or one of the assistant managers. Just sounds ridiculous.
However I did a dummy booking and they will accept Diners but not Amex.
Worst case scenario pay off some on your card then pay that off so can put another payment through but let management know what you want to do.

Hope Knagelli can sort this out. JW Marriott is a rebranding of the Stamford Plaza hotel at 22 Albert Street in Auckland.
Was set to reopen in December 2022 after refurbishment. Obviously it has reopened. You would think they'd have sorted out ability to take Amex cards, especially given there are co branded Marriott Bonvoy cards, and that Amex is a card of choice for many corporates and individuals.

The hotel will likely want to fix this fairly promptly as many Marriott Bonvoy members use the co-branded Amex card offered in some markets, as get me outta here noted.

I had this happen to me when staying at a Sheraton in central China a few years ago. I was a Platinum Bonvoy member at the time. I ended up paying on a non-Amex card and contacting the Bonvoy helpline after the stay about the issue, who contacted the property and subsequently refunded my entire stay as an apology.

Hi everyone , I wanted to share the update on amex payment. The hotel was able to send me a payment link where I could use my Amex Platinum Card. Though it took couple of follow ups I finally ended up with no issue and it all closed positively.

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts and suggestions.

Stayed here one night during our recent trip just to check out the property and very underwhelming to say the least. Refurbishment is nowhere near complete and seems a bit of a shame to open the place when it’s still in such average condition. I’d be interested in staying there once it’s all complete
