Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Recent experiences suggest still available. Cancel letter even specified this was an option.
It so happened I received an account(!) cancellation confirmation email from Amex today by mistake (I called to cancel two additional cards, not the account). There is no mention of reinstatement option.

I called the 1300 number on the email and was assured that the account is still in good standing and oddly, the agent seemed well aware of the mistake as soon as I mentioned my concern. He confirmed back to me the details of the two cancelled additional cards in no time!
 
American Express Explorer: I called to cancel a few days ago. No points were offered, nor did I ask for any. They did offer to move me onto a card with a cheaper annual fee, however I declined.
 
Plat charge card annual fee just turned up. Rang them up and offered 30k points not to cancel. Took the points as I still get value from this card.

I guess 30K points is better than none, but the computer wasn't very generous to you!
 
Agreed. More generous than 12 months ago when computer gave me nothing.
Yes indeed - I got nothing 12 months ago as well, so here's hoping, but as per you, I still get value from the card --- was surprised that one of my kids really wanted to signup to Centr subscription and the recent $400 grocery rebate, plus some other small promotions were nice too

Last time I called the computer offered 30k, I refused and told the agent let me think and call you later. Then, I called again and was offered 200k to keep the Plat Charge, wondering if the computer in Manila may have a different offer than the computer in Sydney 😀

If I was more on the ball, I should have called prior to the annual fee turning up on the account. There's always next year :)

Gotta say - that's pretty legendary work - remind me of different calling times to the 2 call centres?

Yes, if you call outside business hours you likely talk to the agents in Manila, and during business hours you **may** get to the Sydney office.

Wasn't offered anything (as I had just been offered a bunch to 'keep' it a few months back) so closed it to save my $195 - as travel credit and the other perks aren't super worth it for me living in Singapore!
 
I no longer use my plat edge so called up to cancel it but was offered 80k points to stay.

My plat charge is about to expire so will let everyone know if they will try to retain me, current spending on it is about 160k per card year (hoping to get invite to centurion)

Hi, did they cancel the plat edge first then advised theres 80k bonus to reinstate or outright offered 80k bonus points when you said you want to cancel? Was this offered by the standard customer service rep or cancellations team?

They offered me 80k straight away when I told them I want to cancel the card because I no longer needed it.

It was through cancellation team.
 
20k pts offered to keep plat edge
took the deal

60k pts to keep plat charge, don't think i will but I have close to 2m points banked and i'm worried i'm going to miss a transfer bonus
