Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

I just cancelled my explorer card and I actually feel kind of sad as it is my fav card but no point keeping it with the new changes coming up.

No bonus points offered either.

Called again to try to change Explo - Plat Edge and got told that they can do it but AUD5 for every 1k points transferred to Ascent. And, there is a new legislation for 2019 that Amex cannot offer retention bonuses now and when a consumer ask to cancel, they will just proceed to cancel.

Wondered if Amex Gateway (non linked Explorer) did a gifting of points of 50k points to another Amex Gateway (Explorer linked to Plat Edge), does the 50k points get converted to Ascent program without the surcharge?

If explorer is linked to edge then it's not Gateway anymore. So I would imagine yes you would get charged the $5

Data point: As per my original post and some others' post on another thread, can confirm that you need to cancel your card first before being advised whether there is a retention bonus.

If there is no retention bonus, you can and or must reinstate your card on the same phone call (do not hang up or end the phone call with the same agent). Reinstating your card 'returns your card to normal' - local champion and saved offers etc.

Otherwise, your card is cancelled for good.

Also, cancelling your card for good still allows you to transfer out your points in 30 days.
I called just then,
my fee is due 1st feb
got told over the phone that retnetion bonus not offerd anymre due to law,
and they can cancel the card, but no guaratnee they can reinstate it

so dont know what to do, if I should try,

or maybe just try again once the fee hits

The bolded bit sounds like a scare tactic to me. Either it is something that can be done or not.

Yeah agree.
But the number of accounts of reports of people getting offered bonus after cancellation isnt too high as well

thought id try again, this time the guy said that once a card is cancelled, you willl have to reapply to get the card back,

seems like the amex gods are not with me recently :)

I suspect this is their strategy going forward as it entirely reduces the risk to AMEX of having to gamble loyalty bonuses on whether customers really intended to cancel or not. I bet the cancellation stats look great for AMEX since this change.

With comprehensive credit reporting, it’s also a gamble for consumers that we might not get approved if we have to re-apply or get less credit than we had with lots of regulatory focus on ‘responsible’ lending now.

so dont know what to do, if I should try,

if you want to keep the card, dont cancel it.
If you want to cancel it, then cancel it.

AMEX has finally woken up to those people who just con them out of money every 12 months that want everything for nothing, and IMO I think thats a good thing. In the long run that should make it better for those who are genuinely loyal to the product

I suggest you 'retry' again in a few days / week.

I called around 4-5 times. Each call provided slightly different advice. Pray that each call you get someone helpful!

I doubt it, HUCA. Likely a training issue.

There is a post where someone cancelled and un-cancelled (it referred to ApplePay being cancelled and then they reinstated).

Multiple phone agents were clear the policy was you get 30 days after annual fee charged to cancel, and you can un-cancel again on the spot.
