Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

A week ago I called and asked them to waive my annual fee for my explorer and link it as a companion card to the Platinum Charge card. The first operator said she'll send through the request, and then a few days later the second operator said that's not possible. I then explained that it's stupid having to apply for a companion platinum reserve card going through application and another credit check etc, when explorer card gives $400 travel credit just like the reserve credit card. I didn't really mention about cancelling my explorer card, just unhappy and said that they make life hard for customers. Got offered 15k ascent premium points and also transfer all my MR points to Ascent Premium as well as any future spending on explorer card will earn the same rate but as Ascent premium. Not a bad turn out I guess...

Doesn't the biz accelerator have a $160 annual fee?

I was sent it many years ago free for life I did not know it was 2pp$ untill they called to ask why i was not using it . once I realised I of course use it;.

Partner has the Qantas Premium & Platinum edge, was really happy when they offered 100k points as couldn’t refund fee then pushed the issue of a further 100k on the remainder card, was happily offered 100k. Has this ever been heard of?

How long did your partner hold those card for? I was told by an Amex operator that it's based on the length of file with them

I believe it’s maybe close to $25k each card a year but unfortunately paying interest in their favour & not full balance paid each month. This may have some bearing.

paying interest would be a huge factor i reckon.. credit card interest rates are very profitable..

No bonus points offered when threatening to cancel my QF Ultimate Amex after 11 months and a few K per month spend, despite a large number of family and friend referrals. "No bonus offers are showing on your profile".

I rang to cancel my Velocity Amex and was offered 70k not to. Even though when they asked me why I wanted to cancel it, I said it was so I could get a DJ Amex.

Have a DJ AMEX to cancel as well. Will try the same routine in the next few days. But by the end of the month I expect to be AMEX free and waiting out the 18 month exclusions period.

I did see a report in another thread (can’t find it at the moment) from a AFF’er that applied between 12-18 months and was denied the bonus points. Might have been a one off, but I wouldn’t bank on it and if you’ve waited 12 months I’d hold out until 18

I have the WBC Altitude Black Mastercard and AmEx companion. I rang earlier this week to request they be cancelled prior to the forthcoming renewal date and charging of approx $300-$350 fees. The first operator put me on hold while she worked out the payout figure. No effort was made to retain me at this stage. She came back on the line to say she needed to transfer me to someone else to complete the transaction. This second person was very keen to identify the reason for cancelling and suggested I stick with the Altitude rewards as no QF fee component. In the the end I stuck with the QF points program and she has waived the annual fees for 12 months. This service representative was Adelaide based.

Rang to cancel on anniversary date. No points offered on Amex plat edge with 30k annual spend. Member since 2015. Will try again in the new year in case it's a yearly thing. $149 annual fee.

Just called to cancel Plat Biz card spent over 100k no offer, cancelled.I actually like having only 3 amex now instead of 5.

Called to cancel my DJ AMEX card today. Was prepared to listen to any offers they may have to keep my account open.


Was asked why I was closing the account and I detailed very poor recent experiences with my card having a hold placed on it it for:


1) Being in credit.


2) Attempting to register my cards for Apply Pay.


No attempt to apologise for the difficulties this caused. No attempt to offer any compensation. No attempt to talk me out of cancelling my account.


Account now closed.


I am now without any AMEX cards and am sitting out the 18 month exclusion period.
