Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

I would have thought they just look at your account history and say that youve already got a bonus

I called on my card. Fees due feb

Got an aussie who said there was nothing on my card incentive points wise
Thank god he didbt say these changes were positive
 
AF due in Jan. Called up, "no problem sir I'll cancel right away".. Called my bluff .
Same nada....he also said I received 35K last year and therefore no retention bonus this year. Close to half a mil spend on explorer if people are after datapoints
 
Called for my Edge last year was offered no bonus points. Called again recently, no bonus points again, instead this time was told I could have this "invite only" card for $89 a year

Reduced earn rate at 2 : 1 for spend I get 3 : 1 on at the moment on the Edge plus no travel credit included however the cost is less than the $195 for the Edge.

What this card does offer is 2 Priority Pass vouchers per year.

I passed and will call again in April to see if anything has changed with the devaluation.

Called on Friday to talk about the reduction in earn rates. I've got a Charge and QF Ultimate card and been a member for 12 years now. My total spending on both Amex cards is maybe $60k PA. Mentioned how unhappy I was with the changes and wondered whether there would be a reduction in annual fee. Said I was considering cancelling both cards when renewal comes up. Nothing offered. Specifically asked if there was anything that could be done to lessen the blow and was just told about the doubling of points on the charge in April.

Will try again when renewal dates roll around, but seems like they aren't that keen to keep me as a customer.

I have never come across this card before but I suppose that is to be expected since it is invitation only.
 
There certainly doesn’t seem to be a consistent approach to offering a retention bonus.
For those who have received a successful retention offer, did you all call at a particular time of day (e.g. during business hours, evening, weekend etc)? Just thinking that as AMEX operates multiple call centres, it could be that some call centres have access to the retention offers and others don't...

I called busienss hours becasue talking to an aussie is fsr more productive than talking to a philipino.
That didnt work.
So ill try outside business hours now

I called out of NZ office hours on a weekday and spoke to someone in the Philippines. My bonus took less than 5 minutes to secure.
 
I initially tried live chat but when I mentioned a retention bonus I was given a phone number to call - the same one as on the back of my card.

Thanks, I guess retention bonus is via another system that the Live Chat team do not have access to.

No offer

Got told retention offers are usually in your final month which for me is next month

In my experience there's a whole bunch of things where the Live Chat team will ask you to call, so that doesn't surprise me in the least
