Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Do you guys ask for some sort of deal or they offer it outright when you state you wish to cancel?

I have been wondering the same thing - I have a Velocity model due to be cancelled

Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Approach it a bit like the mafia- "mighty fine card I have here, shame if something were to... happen... to it."

Actually, I think it's reasonable to suggest you were considering cancelling because of deval X or lack of utility or better alternate cards etc, and see if they can offer anything to keep you.

Should I approach them once I'm charged my annual fee?

Will report back later - just paid my annual fee for the Plat Charge...I hope the horse haven't bolted just yet.

Cheers, I think my Plat Charge is due during my February cycle

Yes phamid, after you have been charged.. then ask for some retention in the way of points to retain the Plat Charge card [the amount of points can change]...has worked for me for years.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I tried to cancel my Platinum Edge (that I have had since 2012) to see what I bonus I could get, but got offered nothing.

Going to HUCA today, will report back.

Should be noted that I have a partner PE, so have been paying $50 less than listed annual price

I usually contact them a few weeks out from renewal. My fee is discounted through a professional association, up until a couple of years ago they would refund the fee once it was deducted from the card, but this time around it was points only.

Amex do pro-rata refund on some cards though, so you still have a chance after the fee is deducted. I think they also factor in whether you have used any of the benefits yet and the length of membership going by the conversation when I've contacted them

Been a member since for a number of years now, had this particular card for the first year and used all the benefits (PP, Platinum Reserve, Accor, travel credit, etc). Would that be a better case than not using the benefits at all?

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Using the benefits costs them money, and shows that you ARE getting some value from the card, which is why I always negotiate on the coming years fee.

I'd assume since you had an opportunity to use them, then your decision to cancel would be taken more seriously.

I'll call them just before it's due.

I have the chance to buy my next car on Amex, but have to pay the dealers MSF. This equates to $1,900. I clearly will not earn enough points to make it worthwhile. However, as it is a Platinum card with a $1,200 annual fee, is it possible this transaction would enable me to get a really large renewal bonus ?
i will have spent just over $200,000 on the card when the renewal comes up if i put the car through.

Anyone else tried this ?

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

What's the cost to pay with Visa or MC?

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

1.5% Amex, 0.85% MC Visa. And they wont waive it, i did ask.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

It sounds like you might need a high earning Visa or MC (eg virgin high flyer, citi prestige, or one of the 1ppd Qantas cards), or a bank issued Amex (for 1.5ppd). I don't think your increased spend on the Plat Charge Amex will get you enough points (either directly or via the "threatened cancellation" route) to justify the 1.5%. Just my opinion.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I only put about 2-3k pm through my Amex these days and they still give me give me the same discounts on the fee as they used to when I was spending 10 times that. Suspect they would be more interested in your average monthly spend rather than one-off,

i have bought 6 cars in the last 4 years but this was on signature then prestige.

Digger11, I payed for 2 Audi A6,s on my charge card @ 1.75% but Amex had promo,s of 10 points & 5 points per $ at the time so it worked out ok for me, in your case it is up to you... it may be a good bargaining chip??.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

seeing as you are going to need to talk to Amex anyway about a reduction/bonus on your annual fee, you could maybe run the car purchase scenario by them? Paying $1900 in surcharge with no certainty seems like a reasonable risk.

As an aside digger11, if you are only putting through about $80k a year on the card without the car purchase, do you get decent value out of the $1200 annual fee?

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Rang Amex to cancel my Amex Platinum Charge card - offered only 23K Amex MR points to retain card.
